Guess the riddle: how to revive your hair color and hairstyle without ruining your hair? The answer has been known for decades - highlighting. There are many ideas for highlighting, thanks to the efforts of professional hairdressers, colorists and those who like to experiment - from the standard version, with “thousands” of bleached strands that create the appearance of more voluminous and lighter hair, to multi-color compositions in which every pink or caramel strand is thought out and in its place .
In our article, we will describe and show photographs of highlighting ideas that a) are now popular, b) cause admiration and a desire to run to the salon (or experiment at home).
Lilac-turquoise highlights for dark hair
An unusual contrasting combination of colors will literally make the hairstyle more vibrant and, perhaps, a little daring. If you have long dreamed of dyeing your hair blue, yellow, green, red, but do not dare, try this highlighting, vary the intensity of the color of the strands depending on your needs. If you have a strict dress code at work, take a closer look at the first option - if you put your hair in a ponytail, the contrasting strands will be almost invisible, if you are not limited by anything, the ideas from the second and third photos will definitely add individuality to your hairstyle.
You can also limit yourself to lilac, it looks great!
Advantages and disadvantages
Like any other hair coloring technique, veiling has its pros and cons. Among the advantages of this type of strand lightening, several factors can be identified.
- Looks great on any hair. Processing such thin strands allows you to create the effect of natural volume and fullness of even the thinnest and lifeless hair. At the same time, the appropriate shade and frequency of bleached strands can be selected for almost any length and type of hair.
- Doesn't change hair color completely. When highlighting using the “veil” technique, a brunette will still remain a brunette, and a redhead will still remain a redhead. Thin bleached strands do not change the hair color, but only highlight it favorably and add some sophistication.
- Gentle method. Since coloring is carried out on a very small part of the hair and only on its outer side, this method can be called quite gentle. Unlike conventional dyeing, veiling preserves about 80-90% of the hair.
- Masks gray hair. If a woman does not want to have gray hair, but is not ready to spoil its health with full dyeing, veiling is perfect for disguising individual gray strands. If you make a long stretch of color using several shades of paint, you can get an interesting shimmer effect.
- Correction is carried out less frequently, and the growing roots are almost invisible. Veiling allows you to take a more relaxed approach to coloring due to the fact that the colored strands at the roots are thinner. In the event that the desire to renew the highlights does not arise, the strands can be safely grown without resorting to full coloring or lightening of the hair.
- Helps correct facial imperfections. Correctly selected color and width of highlighted strands can shade too round cheeks or, conversely, emphasize high cheekbones.
Unfortunately, there are also many disadvantages of such technology.
- Duration of the procedure. Separating the finest strands, dyeing them individually and packing them in foil is a task that requires from 3 to 6 hours. The duration, of course, depends on the thickness and length of the hairstyle, but even a short bob or bob will require at least 2.5-3 hours from the master.
- Complexity of the procedure. Not every trained professional knows how to lighten hair using the veil technique. Not to mention self-taught masters. Experts strongly recommend that you stop trying to veil even short hair at home. The result can be quite sad and require radical lightening or dyeing of the hair to get rid of the consequences.
- The procedure is expensive. Based on the duration and complexity of such highlighting, the price for such a service is quite high. Along with other popular dyeing, veiling is considered the most painstaking hair operation. However, it is not recommended to save on such services, since an execution error will negate the entire effect of the veil.
- Dries and damages hair. Even such a gentle procedure is lightening, which spoils the hair and makes individual strands more brittle and dull. At the same time, the closed method, which uses foil, is considered more harmful.
Thus, each woman herself chooses whether the advantages of the hair veiling technique outweigh its disadvantages. According to online surveys, the majority prefer highlighting with thin stripes due to the fact that in this case the hairstyle looks fresh and voluminous longer, even without adjustments. And the adjustment itself can be carried out much less frequently, once every 2-3 months, depending on the speed of hair growth.
Caramel highlights
Perhaps the most popular type of highlighting (balayage, shatush, names may vary) is the color of caramel, into which dark hair smoothly transitions. If your hair is long, you can dye only the ends. One of the most popular options is the combination of a long asymmetrical bob and caramel balayage, which gives any girl a sunny Californian chic.
Types of highlighting
Classic highlighting with purple strands has a right to life, but it looks strange. The use of fantasy shades requires ideal completion of the image, which is why it is usually used in harmonious or contrasting combinations.
Here are the types of highlights with a purple tint that will look most advantageous:
- ombre for long and medium hair;
- feathers on short and medium graduated haircuts;
- horizontal zebra or zonal;
- zonal highlighting on bangs;
- tortoiseshell on hair of any length;
- balayage for long and medium curls;
- Venetian highlights combined with red tones.
I described in detail how to perform any of the above techniques in other articles that you can find on our website. But I want to emphasize once again - if you are not sure that you can do everything yourself efficiently and without mistakes, it is better not to experiment - purple does not forgive them.
Hazelnut
If you have fairly dark hair, hazelnut highlights will look great on it. The walnut shade will create a bronze effect, making the dark blond contrasting with it more saturated.
How to choose the type of highlighting?
Now it remains to understand which of the many highlighting methods is right for you. If, even after photographic examples of haircut types, you still have doubts, we suggest starting from other equally important factors: hair color and its structure.
Depending on natural shade

If you have dark hair, try these types of highlights:
- colored with bright strands of pink, red or blue tones,
- highlighting Peek-a-Boo - also in color,
- Two-Tone highlighting with tones as close as possible to the main shade.
For light brown hair, the best options are:
- partial highlighting of strands of the face into a golden or cool blonde,
- diagonal highlighting,
- mazhimesh in sunny golden tones.
Blondes can try the following methods:
- veil with a shade similar to the main one,
- colored highlights with peach strands,
- feathers in a shade of cold blond.
Depending on hair structure
Girls with naturally straight hair can afford any highlighting options.
But there are special techniques for those with curly hair.
Frost
Using foil, apply the composition to the styled ends of the hair using rotational movements. Due to this technique, the strands look slightly touched by a lighter color.

The lower strands are highlighted in a color that is a couple of tones lighter than the main one. This creates a soft lighting effect on the hairstyle.

Highlighting with magenta color
One of this season's favorites is the newly introduced color magenta, a lively, bright and rich shade of lilac. This coloring option will certainly suit cold-type girls with fair skin and blue eyes, but “autumn” girls should also take a closer look at this extravagant option - thanks to the presence of red, the magenta gradient will suit them too.
Color highlights for brown hair
Brown hair is considered a real “field of experimentation” among stylists. They have a less rigid structure compared to dark hair, and a stronger structure than light hair. Easier to paint. They are compatible with most colors and shades and do not require pre-lightening or bleaching.
Owners of such hair can have coloring done both in the salon and at home.
Colors suitable for highlighting light brown hair:
- Golden;
- Ginger;
- Chestnut;
- Honey;
- All shades of red;
- All shades of purple;
- Blue and blue;
- Emerald;
- Pink.
The best option for fair-haired girls is to use several colors or shades at once when dyeing. This will help create additional visual volume and a beautiful shimmering effect of the strands.
Dyed curls should be washed using shampoos for colored hair. They help maintain color for as long as possible and restore hair structure after dyeing.
Color highlights are suitable for owners of any hair color. Before dyeing, consider the pros and cons of this dyeing technique. With selected colors and intensity, color highlighting will transform you and add a bright accent to your image.
Many color specialists use hair tinting immediately after highlighting to complete the created image and add zest to it. Hair tinting after highlighting - choosing methods and means, carrying out the procedure in the salon and at home.
We will consider the features of the hair bronding technique in this material.
Soft pink highlighting
An option for the brave in spirit, but soft in heart
Blue highlights
Have you ever heard the expression “blue-black hair”? Description of very black hair, which is not very common among the Slavs, but is ubiquitous among representatives of the Mongoloid race. If you are the happy owner of natural or dyed black hair, then why not highlight its beauty and add blue or dark purple strands to it?
