Orthodox Christians will celebrate several church holidays in November 2021

Memorial Day of St. Hilarion the Great November 3, 2018

The monk was born in 291 in the Palestinian village of Tawafa. He received his education in Alexandria, where he met Christians and was baptized there. Having heard about Anthony the Great, he retired to the desert to receive lessons in ascetic life.

When Hilarion returned to his homeland, he no longer found his parents alive. He distributed all his property to the poor, and he himself went into the desert. There he was subjected to various tests, but he did not abandon his feat. When they learned about the monk, residents from nearby villages began to come to him to receive healing. He healed everyone for free, saying that the grace of God is not for sale. Those who wanted to become his students also came to him. One day the saint was attacked by robbers, but he was able to convince them to leave their robber lifestyle and take the true path. With the blessing of St. Hilarion, monasteries with a strict way of life began to appear throughout Palestine. 7 years before his death, the monk moved to the island of Cyprus, where he engaged in heroic deeds until his death.

Feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God November 4, 2021

The Icon of the Kazan Mother of God is one of the most beloved and revered icons in Russia. The event in honor of which the icon was erected is one of the greatest facts in the history of the country. The name Kazanskaya comes from the miraculous intercession for Rus' in troubled times.

In the past, the Poles attacked Rus' and their army was countless. The Russian squads could not defeat their enemies without the help of God, without the patronage of the Queen of Heaven. Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, who was at the head of the Russian militia, asked that a miraculous icon be brought from the city of Kazan. When this icon arrived in Moscow, Patriarch Hermogenes appealed to the entire Russian people to rise up to defend their native land. They brought this icon to the Kremlin, carried it around the city of Moscow and undertook a three-day fast, constantly praying that the Most Holy Theotokos would protect them from their enemies. Their prayers were heard, and Russian soldiers were able to push back the enemy invasion.

On this day, solemn liturgies are celebrated in all churches. They pray to the Mother of God for salvation and prosperity. She is considered the Savior from mental and physical torment.

Nativity fast in 2018-2019: rules

For those who want to enter the Nativity Fast as the church teaches, you need to know what rules should be followed during this period:

  • A few days before the start, you can repent and receive a blessing from the priest.
  • You cannot allow anger, envy, or despondency in your soul. If you have any doubts about whether you will be able to endure it to the end, you need to go to church for advice. It is important to remember that God does not give everyone more than they can handle.
  • During these months, you should avoid entertainment events, holidays, and entertaining shows. This is important both from a spiritual point of view and from a practical point of view: during the holidays it is easier to be tempted and break the fasting diet.
  • You should abstain from intimate relationships.
  • During this period, you need to attend church as often as possible.

Day of celebration of the Council of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Forces November 21, 2021

This celebration was established at the beginning of the 4th century at the local Council of Laodicea on the eighth day of the ninth month. In those days, the months in church theology were counted from March. The holiday was established in order to streamline the worship and praise of angelic powers.

Some Christians worshiped them as gods and considered them to be the creators of the visible world. Therefore, the church established a holiday so that everyone would know that angels are not gods, that they have one Master and Lord with people. They pray with people and also pray for the salvation of humanity. The Church names many names of Angels and divides them into 9 ranks in the heavenly hierarchy. Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, who was a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of Athens, wrote a lot about this. Based on the Holy Scriptures, Dionysius names 9 angelic ranks: Cherubim, Seraphim, Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, Powers, Powers, Angels and Archangels. Each of the ranks of angels bears a certain obedience before God and their names correspond to the way they act. Some constantly arrive in heaven, praising God, others are messengers for people.

According to church tradition, a Christian is given a Guardian Angel during the sacrament of baptism, who protects him throughout his life. Above those ranks of angels stands the Archangel Michael, whose name means “who is like God.” The Gospel fully shows the participation of angels in the life of the human race and in the history of our salvation.
