Maria Grazia Chiuri rethought the very silhouette of the clothes, reminiscent of typical shepherd's cloaks with a hood. She gave them a modern twist, creating coats, tunics, bombers and Chevrier blazers, combining them with jeans, fashionable over-the-knee boots and berets a la Che Guevara.

Dior accessories - an emphasis on refined elegance
Fashionable details can combine several concepts in a suit into a single, cohesive look. In the Dior FW 2021 2018 collection, accessories captivate with their delicacy and miniature size. Silver chains, short leather straps with miniature dragonflies, the Dior logo, and stars are elegant decorations and an excellent addition to taffeta jackets, Mao dresses, velvet suits, dresses, cashmere coats and even denim overalls.
Dior bags deserve special attention. Black Dioraddict leather products and golden clutch boxes are not large in size. They are active elements in every image. Particularly decorative are the belts with gold and silver medallions on a wide belt, a shiny neat lock of a strict rectangular shape and the DIOR emblem on the leather tongue. This was noted by critics, fashion experts, and fans of the famous Italian designer. Looking through the fashion show, it becomes absolutely clear that with the arrival of Maria Grazia Chiuri, a new era began in the Dior fashion house, an evolution of style aimed at the younger generation.
Maria Grazia Chiuri took Paris to the hills of California
The fashion show took place in one of the most picturesque places on the globe at sunset. Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri showed a collection whose images resonated with the wild nature of the canyon and referred to classic Westerns and ancient cave paintings at the same time.
Following the European brands Louis Vuitton (Resort 2021 show in Palm Springs in the futuristic mansion of comedian Bob Hope overlooking the Coachella Valley) and Burberry (show of the autumn-winter collection 2015/2016 at the Griffith Observatory), Maria Grazia decided to hold a show in sunny California Chiuri, the first female creative director in the history of the French fashion house Dior. The location for the show was the National Recreation Area at the top of the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve in the vicinity of Los Angeles. Almost eighty years ago, the legendary film “Gone with the Wind” was filmed here; today the house of the Kardashian-West couple is located nearby.
Guests of the show were seated under tents, covering the floor with mats, while models walked on the ground, dried by the scorching sun. The show was attended by Charlize Theron, Demi Moore, Brie Larson, Rihanna and another 800 guests from different countries. The sunset mountains of the reserve became the natural backdrop for the show. By analogy with the famous “Hollywood” sign, on one of the hills there was an elegant inscription Dior Sauvage (“Wild Dior”). In territory once owned by the Tongva and Chumash Indians, Ms. Curie showed a collection inspired by American Westerns.
Since joining Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri has showcased feminist T-shirts, a modern interpretation of the bar jacket and full embroidered tulle skirts. The designer does not part with the feminist message in the Cruise 2021 collection, images from which would be quite suitable for Natalie Portman’s heroine from the neo-western Jane Takes a Gun. After all, not only men became cowboys in the Wild West. In the 19th century, women who joined the ranks of cowboys were called “cowgirls.” Of course, these were rather exceptions to the rule, but there were such women - they had to do hard work on the ranch due to the death of their husband or during his absence. Some even participated in rodeos. By the way, they dressed appropriately, because ease of movement was a priority for these ladies. Even then, cowgirl skirts were shorter, although in general the clothes were closed and multi-layered.
Models at the show walked in dresses made from natural fabrics, decorated with ancient symbols referencing cave paintings - a kiss from the new creative director after decades, Monsieur Dior, who in 1951 was himself inspired by drawings discovered by archaeologists in the caves of Lascaux in the south of France (Ovales collection ). The length of Curie's dresses and skirts was reminiscent of the traditional cowgirl outfit. Knitted capes were a nod to traditional ponchos. The collection is made in shades of rust, ocher, clay and scorched earth. An integral detail – a flat hat was present in all models (with ties under the chin or decorated with beads). According to Chiuri herself, her sources of inspiration were the landscapes and still lifes of the American feminist artist Georgia O'Keeffe, as well as the writings of the female shaman Vicki Noble. Her drawings became the basis for prints that can be seen on blouses and skirts.
