RR publishes the results of a large study of the ideal of female beauty in modern Russia. Of course, in our country there are many more beautiful ladies than the 20 leaders of the popular rating and the 89 women named by experts and journalists. Both our experts and the editors understand that it is unfair to single out a few of the most beautiful women; ratings and beauty contests smack of sexism. But the point in our research is not in “ratings”, but in understanding the meaning of beauty and the values dominant in the country. The opinion of the people and experts in our method is not accidental - it reflects the spirit of the times and the ideals of the era. Thus, in a study eight years ago (see RR No. 8 (38) dated March 5, 2008), people voted for Alina Kabaeva when she was known as an Olympic champion, but not yet as a political symbol. In the 2021 study, Natalia Poklonskaya received the most votes. That is, it is not only about beauty, but also about the person. How we conducted the research
Unlike gloss, we did not want to impose certain beauty standards on our respondents. It was important for us to see life in all its nuances and diversity. I had to abandon the search for “beauties in general” - it would have been impossible. Therefore, we decided to explore beauty using the examples of women whom many in our country presumably know, that is, to one degree or another, famous heroines - actresses, athletes, public figures, presenters, scientists and entrepreneurs. People can not only know them from stories and photographs, but also highly appreciate their actions, performances, work, skill, and charm.
Expert survey
In the first stage, we attracted 30 “beauty experts”: stylists, photographers, directors, artists, designers, celebrity hairdressers, sports commentators and even a writer and official. We asked them the following questions:
1. Name three women who, in your opinion, are models of beauty for modern Russia.
2. Comment on your choice: what exactly makes them beautiful?
3. What is beauty in terms of your profession and experience?
4. How is the ideal of beauty changing in Russia? Is the modern ideal different from the ideal of past eras?
The result was a list of about 100 beauties. After we had to weed out the not-so-famous heroines and add the obvious famous beauties suggested by our editors, the list included 89 women.
Mass voting
Based on the expert list, we created a form for online voting and posted it on the websites expert.ru and rusrep.ru. Within a week, 240 thousand readers took part in the project. An amazing discovery for us was how magically a prosecutor's uniform works when worn on beautiful women; It was also discovered that super-popular bloggers can mobilize their supporters in a day and storm the top places in the polls, that a beautiful librarian from Vladivostok, thanks to the support of her region, can become more popular than leading actresses, and that women who are known for their good deeds - say, saving children - become even more beautiful in the eyes of the public.
Sociological survey
RR, together with the Research Center of the SuperJob.Ru portal, conducted a survey in which respondents could choose five beauties. It is interesting that even in this case, Natalya Poklonskaya ended up in a high fourth place (and among men - in first). In the general poll, first place was given to the famous film actress Agnia Ditkovskite.
