Hats: types, models, shapes, styles
By protecting the head from adverse environmental influences, a hat can instantly change a person’s image: an ordinary man in a hat looks like a gentleman, and a woman looks like a lady! In addition, in a class society, they showed which rung of the social ladder a person managed to climb. Headwear: types: knitted hat with a pom-pom, knitted hat-sock, knitted earflaps (women's) All types of hats can be divided into two large groups: special and household. |
An excursion into the history of hats
Everyone knows that in the old days people covered their heads with colorful scarves, and in winter they covered themselves with down shawls. But not many people know about what cave Neanderthals wore.
Initially, not knowing how to sew, people covered their heads with large leaves. These were mostly burdocks. A little later, straw models appeared. Of course, such hats are completely poor quality and were intended for the warm season.
With the development of handicraft production, humanity learned to weave, and scarves appeared. Men preferred felt hats. And for the winter cold, fur was used, from which not only various types of hats were made, but also shawls that covered a person to the waist. Animal skins were also used for tailoring.
At first, hats were very simple and served only a protective function. But hat makers appeared, and rich people ordered hats for themselves as decoration. Women decorated them with all sorts of flowers, and men preferred tall top hats, black and smooth.
Stylish headwear for autumn and winter: berets
Stylists advise purchasing unusual berets this winter and fall. Berets are worn by women of different ages. They are popular because they help create delicate looks.
The beret gives the owner an unearthly charm and naivety. It won't look rude. Fashionistas who prefer berets have a calm disposition and try to choose the same clothes.
This season, berets with ornaments and large knits are trendy. A beret with a soft pompom is a suitable option for winter. In the fall, an accessory made from light fabrics will look great and will add nobility to your face.
Fans of French chic and slight negligence can rejoice, because their favorite berets will once again be at the peak of popularity in the fall-winter season. World couturiers decided that the cold is not a reason to give up femininity, attractiveness and sexuality, and therefore decided that there is no better idea how to give your look a romantic, slightly mysterious, but at the same time sophisticated beginning than to wear a beret.
The main supporters of this idea were the fashion brands Gucci and Marc Jacobs. By the way, in both collections we noticed that the designers recommend that we wear classic beret models made from natural warm fabric. The main decoration of such a headdress can be stones and rhinestones.
Functions assigned to headgear
Now craftsmen have learned to sew models from all kinds of materials. You can find a model made of fur, artificial materials, leather, or fabric on sale or order in a studio. In addition, hats are knitted from threads, and instead of high cylinders, caps and baseball caps have appeared, which are more convenient for everyday wear.
The headdress is assigned several functions, which they successfully cope with. The main ones:
- protection from sun, cold, water;
- from exposure to temperatures in the bathhouse;
- as a decorative element.
Any piece of clothing is selected depending on taste preferences, personal preferences and the assigned function.
Fashionable hats fall-winter 2021–2022: original knitted hats
To look interesting and stand out from the crowd, it is enough to have your own unique style, in which all things will be harmoniously combined with each other. Sometimes a small detail can change the whole look or become a highlight.
In winter, such an accessory can be a knitted hat. It looks great with a down jacket, jacket and coat. You can create many different looks with it, because it fits almost any style.
Young people especially like knitted patterns. They are the most popular due to their modernity.
You always want to remain stylish, the models of knitted hats change every year. However, you can always diversify the accessory with an interesting scarf or mittens. Designers advise paying attention to the knitted model.
Those who cannot imagine their life without a warm wool or cashmere hat can also rejoice. The autumn-winter season 2021–2022 will not be complete without a super fashionable knitted hat. The popularity of this headdress is explained by a number of reasons, but the most important are warmth, comfort and the ability to create it yourself.
Since hand-made has always been held in high esteem, I think many fashionistas will agree that their ability to knit is a great opportunity to acquire an original item that no one else has. If you do not have the gift of needlework, then when going to the store, be guided by the only rule for choosing a headdress: you need the hat to fit well and, as they say, suit you.
We can see countless interesting models of knitted hats at the shows of such fashion houses as Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Cacharel.
Varieties of winter hats
In bad weather, you should definitely protect your hair and head from the cold. But any woman strives to look dignified, even with a hat on her head. In order to choose the right model and not freeze, you need to understand the types of styles and their differences.
Beanie
They are knitted hats that fit tightly around the head. They are soft and cozy. They can be with or without a lapel. Some samples have a pompom made of the same threads or fur, which makes the beanie perky and youthful.
Thanks to a wide selection of colors, such hats can please any fashionista. But for those with a round face type, it is better to avoid the tight-fitting option. Knitted hats may not be suitable for people with large features if it is too bulky.
Winter hats in Norwegian style
The characteristic difference of this type is the pattern with snowflakes and deer. The hat is decorated with pompoms, and they are located on ties. Suitable for fur coats and sports jackets.
Hat with ear flaps
The model is made entirely of fur or combined with thick fabric. The style is very warm, and is distinguished by the presence of “ears”, because of which it, in fact, got its name.
The headdress is popular among young people. It perfectly protects from the most severe frosts and winds. The earflap hat is often a source of inspiration for designers. They experiment with it, using different options for fabrics, colors and furs. Adds various accessories, but the style remains unchanged.
You can wear it either with the ears down or up. Combines with voluminous fur coats and sheepskin coats. Moreover, the style is included in both women's and men's wardrobes.
Boyarin style
These are fur hats characterized by their rounded shapes. They can have a shape that envelops the head or rises like a turban. They are expensive options for hats, which are made only from natural furs: sable, arctic fox, mink.
Many models are complemented by decorative inserts in the form of brooches and precious stones. They can be combined with many types of clothing, but it is preferable to combine them with a fur collar.
Thanks to their shape, boyar-type fur hats can be worn on any face shape. However, sharp features and a rectangular shape are most suitable for this look.
Snood
They are at the peak of popularity among young girls. It cannot definitely be called a headdress. A snood is a scarf connected at both ends. More often it is knitted from cashmere or wool. There are samples made of fur, fabric or combined.
The scarf is placed loosely around the neck, draped in folds, and one end is placed on the head. Convenience lies in easily changing the image in case of warming. It very successfully complements the classic look and combines with a sporty style.
Thanks to its smooth lines, it is suitable for women with a round face, which will visually stretch out. However, it is better to choose a soft snood material. Voluminous scarves are appropriate for thinner facial features.
Fashionable hats with decorative elements
Designers send their models onto the catwalk wearing headdresses, which are sometimes not visible behind additional elements. Particularly popular are models with knitted flowers and long, wide ties that serve as decoration.
Fashionable hats often do not fulfill their purpose and serve to support the image. But couture models are being reworked by stylists, and hats for everyday wear are being produced.
Beret
A gentle option for sophisticated girls. It is not suitable for everyone, but if a woman finds her own model, it will perfectly emphasize the dignity of her face. The beret can be made of felt, fur or knitted. Pairs perfectly with a formal coat, a frivolous jacket and a light sheepskin coat.
The beret is considered a universal headdress. Not all hats for women look equally good with a winter coat, fall raincoat or cardigan.
Turban
These are original hats for women who came to us from eastern countries. To protect against the cold, they are made of fur or wool. The turban gives the image mystery, mystery and emphasizes femininity. Looks especially stylish on long flowing hair.
Best worn with long coats and warm cardigans. However, brave girls carry the look perfectly by combining a turban with a leather jacket. You just have to take into account that it is better for chubby young ladies to refuse this option. However, if you wish, you can choose your own turban by experimenting with shape and color.

Men's styles
Even strong-willed men don’t want to freeze outside in winter. To maintain the image of a macho man, a gallant gentleman, or simply to hide from the wind, you should choose a suitable headdress.
Of course, you can put on a regular black knitted hat and feel protected from the frost. Although some, especially young people, wear it on the back of their heads. But it’s still better to choose a more solid option that suits the overall style and taste preferences.
Men's hats are distinguished by their practicality and rougher design. However, not everything is so simple. There are models, especially on modern catwalks, that look similar to the female version.
Men's malachai hats are a universal choice for all occasions. This is the same earflaps, only in a variety of designs. It is made of fur or combined models with dark suede; they can be knitted or with fabric inserts. Previously, our grandfathers loved such models, but with significant changes and improvements in the malachai style, men of all ages fell in love.
Winter hats made of natural fur will not only protect from any frost, but will also emphasize the importance of the owner and his status. To choose, be sure to try on the model to ensure it fits properly.
Malachai transforms perfectly. In case of sunny and windless weather, you can tie your ears up, and in bad weather you can simply cover yourself with fur.
Stylish headwear for autumn and winter: hats with pompoms
Interesting hats with pom-poms remain relevant to this day. There is probably no person who does not have a similar model in his wardrobe. She has uniquely established herself in the world of fashionable hats.
The material and shape of the hat changes, as well as the shape of the pompom. Some people prefer a voluminous pompom, while some fashionistas love this small element of the hat. This season there is freedom in choosing materials. You can buy large knitted models. You can purchase models that fit tightly to the head. However, loose accessories are much more popular.
A colorful pompom adds playfulness to the look and is perfect for young girls. What to wear with such models? Definitely paired with a drape coat or a voluminous down jacket, which is fashionable this season. However, with a jacket it will also look youthful. Stylish sunglasses will complement your modern look.
The autumn-winter season will delight us with a variety of perky hats with pom-poms made of thread and wool. These hats will come in handy if you prefer casual or sporty looks. To study popular variations of pom-pom hats, just watch the Gucci fashion show.
Choosing your hat
A hat is selected for a man depending on his lifestyle, clothing preferences and color scheme. For people who often spend time outdoors, a fur option would be an excellent solution. Such models are soft and cozy, completely protecting from any vagaries of the weather.
For lovers of less bulky options and more practical hats, you should choose a sheepskin hat. They are suitable for the stronger half, regardless of lifestyle, type of activity and clothing worn.
Types of sheepskin hats have many positive characteristics:
- resistant to rain and snow;
- they retain heat well, but at the same time, sheepskin, like a natural material, “breathes” perfectly;
- practical, retain a decent appearance, even after several seasons of wear;
- Many men associate sheepskin with a rough and dignified material, which is why it remains fashionable to this day.
Sheepskin is also chosen because of its ease of care and ease of storage in the summer.
As a budget option and for everyday wear, it is advisable to have a knitted version. To produce models, conscientious manufacturers use high-quality wool threads. For special warmth and softness, a lining made of faux or natural fur is used.
The advantage of knitted models is the variety of colors and shapes. You can choose a hat depending on your taste and face shape. However, you should not consider too tight-fitting styles for a round face or miniature hats for large facial features.
When purchasing, you should also pay attention to the presence of insulation and knitting. For winter, you need to opt for a tight knit and fur insulation. Demi-season hats can be looser and without lining at all.
Cossack and boyar hats
In recent years, so-called Cossack hats have become very popular in the West. What it is? These types of hats are directly related to the uniform of the Cossack troops. They are made from sheep skin. Such hats made of long-haired white or black fur are very good. Also, these hats look great if they are made of silver or brown astrakhan fur, astrakhan fur, smushka, merlushka and poyarka.
The pattern of a Cossack hat is not difficult at all - it is a rectangle, the long side of which is equal to the circumference of the head. Short – the height of the hat itself. The bottom, or upper, crown part is a circle. It can be made of the same material as the main part, or it can be textile.
It is worth paying attention to the following types of hats and their names. These are the kubanka, papakha and, the most complex and interesting model, the murmolka.
Murmolka has nothing to do with the Cossacks, but when talking about the types of winter hats, it would be unfair to ignore this men’s headdress. Murmolka is a man's hat. Its crown repeats the kubanka, but the murmolka has a lapel-blade, which, unlike the famous boyarka, which will be discussed below, has a slit above the forehead.
Boyarka is worn by both women and men. In the photographs presented in our article, you can see various types of winter hats, including boyarka. A characteristic feature of this headdress is its two-stage structure, formed by the crown and the edge-lapel. The most expensive models are made from sable, arctic fox and mink.
A tok hat is the same boyarka, but it is made from textiles - drape, velor, corduroy, velvet, natural or artificial leather, etc. Many types of knitted hats are made by knitting or crocheting exactly according to the pattern of a classic tok or small Jewish hats .
Fashionable men's hats
The 2016-2017 season offers the stronger half headdresses in all shades of brown, mustard and gray. Fur products are particularly voluminous and are combined with suede. Such an accessory will always highlight an intelligent man and will be appropriate for a business person.
Knitted options have unusual shapes and cuffs. Often decorated with embroidery and decorative elements. On the catwalks you can see hats with pompoms and braids instead of ties. Such models are similar to women's ones, but are knitted with a coarser knitting and are distinguished by dark colors. However, there are also light models, the so-called unisex.
When combining an image with a hat, it is worth considering that tall men should avoid fashionable styles with long pile. Any model will suit short people, but overly voluminous hats are not recommended for oversized people.
Stylish decor
The hat can be decorated with beads, knitted and sewn flowers. Embroidery, for example, birds or stylish inscriptions, will look interesting. The inscriptions can be embroidered or pasted on.
Rhinestones are the solution for an elegant hat. This fall, you can show your imagination and choose the perfect option for yourself. Pearls, feathers, colored beads - all these elements will perfectly highlight your facial features.
In the modern world, where a healthy lifestyle and self-care are constantly being promoted, it is simply impossible to neglect yourself and your well-being. That is why, with the onset of the first cold days of winter or autumn, we all rush to insulate ourselves and our heads. Of course, no girl wants to be considered a “black sheep” in a ridiculous outfit, and therefore it is extremely important to know what fashionable headwear for fall-winter 2021–2022 will help us stay in trend.
It’s worth saying right away that we simply have nothing to do without fashionable hats, fur and knitted hats, hats with pom-poms and berets in the fall-winter season. So let's quickly find out what colors, prints and decor of fashionable hats we should pay attention to?
The boho style, which is gaining rapid popularity, could not help but leave its mark in the design of hats. That is why many models of hats in the 2021–2022 autumn-winter season will be decorated with all kinds of braids, tassels, ribbons and fringes.
The classic decor in the form of stones, rhinestones, beads and sequins will not go anywhere. The eternal companion of all winter accessories is fur and all kinds of embroidery with thematic patterns.
Summer hats and hats
When the sun is shining brightly in the sky, a hat is also necessary. Panama serves as a stylish accessory that can draw attention to the face and protects the eyes and head from excessive ultraviolet radiation.
Summer hats come in a wide variety and perfectly complement your chosen wardrobe. More recently, a woman’s status and financial situation were judged by her hat.
If previously a lady had the means, then the situation required her to wear luxurious hats. They were decorated with feathers, fresh flowers and precious stones. Often a woman had her own milliner, who knew exactly what size hat was needed and sewed them to order.
Simple girls limited themselves to a cap or tied a scarf on their heads. Nowadays, a headdress can emphasize the position of its owner, but they still have a more practical role.
Choose the model you like that meets all the requirements and completes the chosen image.
Classic hat
The brim can be wide or very narrow, rounded or with clear corners, hard or rolling waves. Any decorations in the form of ribbons, bows or jewelry are allowed. The wider the brim, the more reliable the hat will protect from the sun. More formal options can be safely worn to business meetings.
Knitted patterns
They are made using a hook and have a beautiful openwork pattern. For summer, light yarn is used, preferably natural cotton thread. Such headdresses add a touch of tenderness and romance. Suitable for all women, regardless of age. It is only necessary to take into account the level of frivolity of the model. For mature and business ladies, it is better to choose a monochrome model without unnecessary decorative elements.
Caps
An excellent option for everyday wear and sports hobbies. Thanks to the presence of a visor, it protects the skin from sun rays, and the universal shape will highlight any type of face.
It is worth considering that wide-brimmed hats go well with frivolous dresses and trouser suits. More formal options are combined with a pencil skirt and a straight-cut dress.
The cap comes in handy when wearing sports-style clothing; it is very convenient to use for long walks. Knitted models are best worn for evening walks, because the absence of a visor contributes to sunburn of the face.

When choosing a hat for a child, you should take into account the season in which it will be worn. You should not take a fur model with the expectation of wearing it in winter and spring. A child's wardrobe must have several hats.
The most popular types of hats for children are those that fit the head, with ears and ties. They look great and reliably protect the baby from wind and frost.
Often, children's hats with ties cause protest from the child: they allegedly rub, and children completely refuse to tie them. In this case, you can offer a helmet hat. They do not irritate the skin with tight elastic bands and ties, but they reliably warm, protecting not only the head and ears, but also the neck of the child.
Among the helmets, you can choose both hats for girls and boys. Differences will be in color, texture and overall design. For girls the model looks more feminine, for boys it looks like a knight's accessory.
For kids, it’s better to choose a classic, fur model with cute pom-poms. Hats for girls are decorated with rhinestones, decorative inserts and bright patterns. This product is very warm and quite cute.
For boys, it is better to choose a hat with earflaps, similar to the adult version. Only a children's product is more fun and can be made of faux fur in combination with suede.
In the off-season, you can buy a classic beret for girls. In combination with a coat or a bright jacket, such a headdress looks very fashionable and makes a little lady out of a girl.
Fashionable headwear fall-winter 2021–2022: hats
It would seem that women's hats have long been forgotten. They are perceived as a conservative thing that can add age to its owner. However, fashion designers decided to breathe new life into this wardrobe element. This year, hats are one of the main trends.
A hat is a unique accessory that is not suitable for everyone and does not suit every look. This should be taken into account when choosing a stylish look.
You can choose almost any shape: boater, wide brim, cloche.
Classic options are always popular, so the fedora model will perfectly complement your everyday look. There are no special changes among stylish colors either. Calm shades such as gray, beige, black are relevant.
But you can choose bright colors, they also look pretty good. Felt, suede, leather are excellent materials for winter and autumn.
Perhaps the most important trend of the season will be hats with wide brims. Such an original and elegant headdress will look great paired with classic coats or short fur coats. Many fashion houses have paid a lot of attention to this hat model.
If you watch a runway show for brands like Chanel or Polo Ralph Lauren, for example, you'll notice that the designers literally adorned every look with hats. By the way, a very interesting solution was proposed at Creatures of the wind, where they decided to emphasize the classic hat with an even wider and more striking brim.
Smart choice
When choosing a hat for a child, you should not take it for growth. Otherwise, it will constantly come off either on the eyes and forehead, or let the wind through. It is also better to prefer natural material, but modern, hypoallergenic threads may well serve as a worthy replacement.
An important component when choosing a children's hat is the conditions for wearing it. If a child attends a child care facility, the best choice would be an accessory that is easy to fasten without the help of an adult. On the other hand, for long and active walks, it is important that children’s hats sit securely on their heads and do not slip off even when falling from a sled or skis.
Fur hats
No matter what PETA activists do, fur will never leave our closets. So fur hats do not lose their relevance. But when choosing a fur headdress for the winter, still focus on the relevance of the styles, colors and quality of this very fur. Give the arctic fox “saucepans” that turn yellow to be eaten by moths and don’t even try to adapt them to modern realities. The new millennium dictates its own rules, and according to these rules, even the usual styles of fur hats find a second wind.
A mink hat can look great with heels.
Beanies
This hat has a simple cut and fits easily on the head without any ties. The sock hat is chosen mainly to be longer, then the rest of the fabric at the back of the head can be gathered into elaborate folds or decor can be added. If someone does not like long hats, then you can choose a style that is more fitted to the head. It is thanks to the wide selection of lengths and colors that the beanie will suit any of your looks.
Jockey hats
A funny helmet often appeared at Fashion Week. It's designed for riding, of course, but this fashionable beanie looks great while riding around town! Emilio Pucci remains committed to leather jockeys, Anna Sui offers a combination of different fabric textures, and Lanvin believes that a fashionable riding cap should be decorated with fringe.
Well what can I say? The accessory is certainly controversial and is suitable only for brave and even somewhat desperate girls.
Hats
The show goes on and the classic hats refuse to come out! Armani claims that fashionable fall-winter hats are bowler hats, Lanvin insists on a cowboy version, Yves Saint Laurent offers fedoras to fashionistas, Donna Karan decorates classic hats with fluffy details, but all designers are unanimous that new season hats should have exaggerated fields.
Even if they are not wide, even if the brim desperately bends upward - the 2020-2021 hat is incredibly elegant. If you are not the owner of a luxury car, then the best time to show off such an acquisition is spring. Then the hat will not be threatened by snow drifts and you will not turn into a walking haute couture snowdrift.
The hat can look good with a winter parka.
