Holidays October 17
World Poverty Day (UN)
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was introduced by the United Nations in 1993 and is celebrated annually. The UN calls on all countries on this day to organize events and conduct propaganda to eradicate poverty.
On October 17, 1987, about 100 thousand people of different classes from several countries gathered in Paris, at the Place du Trocadero (French place du Trocadéro). They expressed their opposition to poverty. Demanding respect for human rights, human rights activists supported the slogan of Father Joseph Wresinski (French: Joseph Wresinski, Polish: Józef Wrzesiński), founder of the ATD Fourth World movement: Where a person is forced to live in poverty, human rights are violated. It is everyone’s sacred duty to unite in the fight for respect for these rights.
On this day, a memorial stone was laid at Trocadéro Square.
Pulp and Paper Industry Day
Every year, since 2008, our country celebrates Pulp and Paper Industry Workers' Day. The date was set by presidential decree for the third Saturday of October.
Over the years, workers in this industry have repeatedly appealed to the head of the Ukrainian state with a request to approve such a professional holiday. But only in 2008, the president of our country nevertheless supported such an initiative, citing the fact that every profession, without exception, should have its own day on the calendar.
This day is not known to everyone as Pulp and Paper Workers' Day. But thanks to their skilled work and success in the professional field, every year workers in this area attract the attention of not only domestic fans of their work, but also accept offers of cooperation from many foreign organizations. Which is very prestigious and profitable for our state.
Thanks to this day, many pulp and paper organizations in Ukraine, which were closed for an indefinite period due to perestroika, began their successful revival.
Home Movie Day
This American annual event dedicated to amateur cinema and filmmaking has recently been making waves around the world. Events run by volunteers provide an opportunity for individuals and families to show their own films to the general public.
For the first time and until 2007, Home Movie Day was held on the second Saturday of August. But in 2008, the official day was moved to the third Saturday in October.
Perhaps someone will think that someone else’s home video, if it’s not “strawberry”, but all sorts of weddings and birthdays, is boring. Meanwhile, a lot of films that were publicly shown for the first time at Home Movie Day events were subsequently included in the National Film Registry of the US Library of Congress. Thus, Think of Me as a Person First, an amateur documentary about a boy with Down syndrome, was shown here at an event in New Orleans in August 2006. Our Day, a 1938 amateur film about a few days in the United States and the untitled life of a Kentucky family, also made by an amateur, was added to the registry in December 2007. And this is not the entire list.
The founders of Home Movie Day founded the Home Movie Center in 2005 as a non-profit organization to manage their home and amateur film preservation project. There are a lot of both funny and interesting, educational home videos, including from unidentified people.

National holidays October 17, 2021
Erofeev day
The national holiday “Erofeev Day” is celebrated on October 17 (Old Style - October 4). In the Orthodox calendar, on this day the holy martyr Hierotheos of Athens, bishop, is venerated. Other names for the holiday: “Leshegon”, “Hierofey”, “Erofey”. According to popular belief, on October 17, the goblin falls through the ground. The forest owner parts with his green kingdom, which has managed to drop almost all the foliage to the ground, and breaks down oncoming trees out of anger.
Hierotheus of Athens, together with Dionysius the Areopagite, whose memory is commemorated the day before, was converted to Christianity by the Apostle Paul. He also ordained Hierotheus, who was at that time a member of the Athenian Areopagus, to the rank of bishop. According to legend, both bishops - Hierotheus and Dionysius - were present at the burial of the Virgin Mary. It is unknown under what circumstances Bishop Hierotheus died. What is known for certain is that his death was a martyr’s.
People believed that on Erofey, in the forests before the long winter, the last revelry of goblin took place. Therefore, we did not go into the forest that day, even if it was very necessary. The goblin on Erofey created great troubles in the forest: they broke trees, chased wild animals, driving them into holes, wandered throughout the forest, fought, whistled, screamed and laughed terribly, clapped their hands so that it could be heard in the neighboring villages.
When the time came and the goblin fell underground, they pulled with them animals and birds, herbs and berries, mushrooms and nuts - the forest became empty. If the devil came across a person, then he could drag him underground, so that spending the winter alone would not be boring. People used to say: “The goblin is not his own brother: he will break bones no worse than a bear.” The only remedy against the devil that day was a smoldering birch brand or a burning birch branch, fear as they were afraid of it.
The people believed that the goblin were enraged because Saint Erofei was driving them from the earth, and the goblin could not do anything about it. Therefore, having finally become disgraceful, they fell through the ground for the winter and appeared in their forest estate only in the spring, when the earth had completely thawed.
Since Erofeev’s day was considered bad among the people not only because of the devil’s tricks, but also because evil spirits walked the earth on this day, it was not worth leaving the house on October 17, even for a short time. But if you really had to, you should remember about pectoral crosses and icons.
The winter cold began from Erofei. They used to say: “Since Erofey, even winter puts on a fur coat.” And many men joked: “On Erofey, one “Erofeich” warms the soul.” Erofeich was a strong herbal tincture without a sweet component, which included mint, anise, St. John's wort, oregano, thyme, sweet clover, yarrow, wormwood, strawberry and currant leaves. All this was filled with moonshine of the fourth or fifth distillation, which had about 70-73°, and placed in a dark, warm place for 2 weeks.
They drank erofeyich as an aperitif before dinner, eating it with fatty meat and fish snacks. Even a sip of erofeyich caused such an abundant secretion of digestive juice in the stomach that the one who took it “on the chest” no longer just ate, but ate with great appetite.
Day of gatherings by candlelight
On October 17, lovers of romantic meetings will be happy to celebrate an unusual holiday - Day of Candlelight Gatherings.
A candle is an essential attribute of a romantic dinner. Its flame is mesmerizing; there is something mysterious in the air, exciting the innermost feelings. For some reason, experienced married couples turn family dinner into a regular meal, accompanied by conversations about work, children or other family matters, but not only about their feelings of love for each other. Many have even forgotten that turning point when they stopped confessing their love to each other and looking into each other’s eyes with tenderness. Psychotherapists advise lighting candles in the house more often to improve family relationships.
A lit candle attracts the element of Fire into a person’s life, which underlies human life.

Holiday October 17: International Credit Union Day
This holiday is an excellent occasion to hold numerous events for workers of consumer cooperatives. International Credit Union Day has been celebrated since 1948. As a rule, charity events, competitions, fairs, open days are held on the holiday, and television and radio programs on this topic are broadcast.
The credit union itself is an organization of financial support for citizens, as well as one of the most widespread organizations that can compete with banking institutions. In general, the ideas and concepts of cooperation (joint activities) have become part of everyday life since the 19th century, gaining popularity in European countries.
It is believed that the founders of the theory are Charles Fourier, Robert Owen, Louis Blanc. It was they who tried to explain the economic advantages of cooperation as a form of management, considering it an organization that has a whole future behind it without any shortcomings or contradictions.
It is noteworthy that the idea of holding this holiday was put forward in 1927 in honor of Benjamin Franklin, born on January 17. But this day was not popular and was soon abolished. It wasn't until 1948 that the US government decided to resume the tradition, but set the date to October 17th.
Erofeev day
On October 17, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the Holy Martyr Hierotheos of Athens, who lived in the 1st century and accepted martyrdom. Tradition says that he was a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of Athens.
Scarce and dubious information about the life and death of the saint is contained in the theological work “Areopagitik”, written in Greek. It mentions that Hierotheus and Dionysius the Areopagite were called by Divine power to be present among the apostles at the death of the Mother of God and at the rite of her burial. In Old Russian and Byzantine iconography, these saints were invariably depicted on the icon of the Dormition of the Mother of God in episcopal robes at the side of the Savior.
As a bishop, Hierotheus was part of the Areopagus, the highest authority of the Athenians. According to legend, he preached in Spain.
