Setting the coffee grinder grind

How to choose the right coffee grinder?

Since it is important what to grind your coffee in and what coffee grinder to use, we will try to give you some tips. There are several types of this device on sale.

  1. Knife.
  2. Millstone.
  3. Manual.

Most models are made according to the knife grinding type. Coffee beans are crushed using sharp knives, which operate at high speed during operation. The degree of grinding can be adjusted based on the operating time of the machine. The longer the coffee grinder runs, the finer the beans will be ground. Users often complain about uneven grinding. This occurs due to the small capacity of the knives, only 120 ml.

In a burr-type machine, the knives will do their job like a mill, grinding the coffee beans into a homogeneous mixture. The degree of grinding primarily depends on the distance at which these knives are located. This type of coffee grinder is capable of grinding no more than 300 g of beans in one go. Such “mills” have a reservoir for the finished grinding.

The good thing about manual coffee grinders is that you can independently regulate the amount of fresh grinding. It provides for the arrangement of two knives. One is attached to the very bottom and the other to the rotating inside of the handle. With this kind of grinding, it is impossible to spoil the coffee, namely, to burn it with great power.

The execution process is simple. You need to add the required amount of coffee beans and perform rotating movements for 20 minutes. This coffee grinder has a special container into which the finished powder comes.

What influences the degree of grinding of coffee?

The taste of coffee is influenced not only by the quality of the beans and the mixture of types, but also by the degree of extraction. It is what saturates the water while preparing your favorite drinks. The strength itself will depend on the degree of grinding. When it comes to simple street spots, no one really works there to improve the taste. All actions follow the same pattern.

1. The barista pours a mixture of beans into the machine’s container. 2. Turns on grinding in auto mode. 3. Fills the portafilter and creates the correct tablet with the tamper.

Most often, the finest grinding is used for these purposes, which turns the grains almost into dust. Despite the fact that the average citizen loves such drinks, it is difficult to call it correct. Coffee is best prepared in special establishments and coffee shops. Where the barista will take into account the guest’s preferences before preparing the drink. This is where the grinding technique will be used, which will create a unique and very tasty drink.

To summarize, there are several main points that every coffee lover should know.

1. If the extraction (grinding process) is too short, then the final drink will not save milk and cream even at the correct temperature. It will be sour and not very pleasant. 2. If the extraction is too long, the coffee will be very strong and bitter.

Much depends on the machine where the drink will be prepared. For example, in a coffee machine the process takes no more than 5 seconds, but in a French press it takes as much as 4 minutes. In the second case, particles that are too small will begin to burn, which will ultimately ruin the drink.

Features and types of coffee grinding

The degree of grinding of coffee beans depends on what kind of drink you plan to prepare. After all, the same grind is not suitable for every drink. You can get the desired grinding consistency depending on how long the “mill” runs.

Kinds:

  1. Large . With this type of grinding, the ground coffee particles are approximately 0.8 millimeters in size. To get it you need to time 10 seconds. This type of coffee is best immersed in drip coffee makers. You should start the grinding process 8 minutes before cooking.
  2. Average . To obtain this type of grinding, you need to time the operating time of the device within 13 seconds. You need to use coffee within 6 minutes so as not to lose the existing qualities and coffee oils. This type of coffee can be used in all types of coffee makers.
  3. Small . To get such a grind, you need to keep the coffee grinder running for about 20 seconds. The powder must be used no later than 4 minutes after mechanical treatment. Perfect for carob coffee makers.
  4. Espresso . This grind type is suitable for coffee makers with an espresso function.
  5. Superfine . In another way it can be called crushed grains “to dust”. You need to grind for 30-40 seconds. Suitable exclusively for making Turkish coffee or brewing in a thicket.

Methods of brewing in a cup

There are five basic cup brewing methods:

  • Brazilian;
  • Polish;
  • Cuban;
  • in the microwave;
  • cold

The powder is measured with a teaspoon, which can hold 3 grams of finely ground grains without a heap, and 5-6 grams with a heap. The drink brewed in a cup can be diluted with milk, decorated with whipped cream and sweetened with syrups.

Brazilian method

Real tasters use this method to evaluate the taste of a drink. It requires coarse grains.

The heated cup is filled with ground coffee, which is covered with hot water. There are 8-9 grams per 100 ml of water. The drink is infused for 4-5 minutes.

The coarsely ground parts float to the surface to form a crust. It prevents the drink from cooling quickly. Remove the crust with a teaspoon after steeping.

Polish method

Good for cooking in the office. Medium grinding grains are required, in proportions of 6-7 grams per 100 ml of water.

The recipe looks like this:

  1. The heated cup is filled with coffee.
  2. Sugar and spices are added to taste.
  3. Add a little hot water to lightly cover the contents of the cup.
  4. The resulting grounds are mixed very thoroughly for 10-15 seconds.
  5. The rest of the water is added.
  6. The cup is covered with a saucer and infused for 3-4 minutes.

Sugar is added immediately so as not to raise the suspension of the finished drink, which settles during infusion. Intensive mixing is necessary for the formation of foam and uniform distribution of the dispersion. If you use spices, they must first be mixed with ground coffee in dry form. This is done so that their particles do not float to the surface while adding water.

Cuban method

Identical to Polish except for some details:

  • prepared in a glass glass in a large portion, about 200 grams;
  • The strength of the drink is ensured by the proportions of 8-9 grams of coffee per 100 ml of water;
  • You can only use cane sugar;
  • add 1-2 teaspoons of dark rum to taste.

Microwave brewing method

Essentially, this is an advanced method that is similar to brewing in a Turk. It requires 6-7 grams of fine or medium grind coffee beans for every 100 ml of water.

Recipe:

  • Coffee is poured into a cup, spices or sugar are added to taste.
  • A little cold water is added to the cup and the contents are stirred for 10-15 seconds.
  • The rest of the water is added, the level of which should not reach the edges of the cup by 3-4 cm.
  • Place the cup in the microwave and turn it on.
  • You should monitor the coffee through the transparent door and remove it when the foam begins to approach the edges.
  • After brewing, the coffee is poured into another cup, rinsed with hot water, and infused for 3-4 minutes.

Cold brew method in a cup

This is a great way to make iced coffee in hot weather. It's easy to implement at home:

  • Ground coffee is poured into a cup in the evening in the proportions of 10 grams per 100 ml of water.
  • The cup is filled with cold water.
  • In the morning, after 12 hours of infusion, cold coffee is ready to drink.

This coffee can be brewed at work, if there is a refrigerator there, or just a secluded place. During infusion, it is better to cover the container with a lid. The finished drink does not require dilution.

Other ways to get coffee beans ground

There are cases when anyone can find themselves without a coffee grinder, and it is not possible to grind beans mechanically. At such times, other kitchen appliances will do.

  1. Kitchen blender with bowl.
  2. Food processor.
  3. Immersion kitchen blender.

In addition to mechanical methods, manual methods can be used. You need to be patient and strong.

Rules: how to grind coffee in a coffee grinder

At first glance, there is nothing complicated about grinding grains. Indeed, the grinding process is as simple as anything ingenious. But as in any business, there are rules, compliance with which will make you a real coffee guru.

  1. Having decided on the degree of grinding, observe the time of both grinding and use. By strictly following the recipe, you will receive a drink rich in aroma and taste.
