Coffee Lavazza: description, varieties

Italian coffee is considered one of the best in the world. Confirmation of this is “Lavazza” - coffee with a centuries-old history and a worldwide reputation. The peculiarity of the brand is the combination in different proportions of two main varieties: Arabica and Robusta. "Lavazza" involves high quality production and is divided into many types.

Italian Lavazza coffee is known for its quality and unsurpassed taste.

History of the Italian brand

The brand name is based on the surname of the company’s founder - a simple grocer Luigi Lavazza (see photo). In 1895, Luigi opened a small shop in Turin, where he offered oil, soap, alcohol and coffee for sale. The competition was high, it was necessary to stand out in some way in order to attract the interest of buyers.

Then Luigi decided to combine different types of grains in different proportions, thereby creating extraordinary tastes and new aromas of the drink.

In addition to roasting and blending, he decided to pack the beans in parchment, which allowed them to preserve the properties and aroma of the product longer. Thanks to Luigi's resourcefulness and genius, the simple grocery store quickly gained fame.

Luigi Lavazza
Luigi Lavazza is the founder of the world famous coffee brand.

During the First World War, business suffered, but Signor Luigi was philosophical about this, reasoning: “War is an episode.”

In 1947, the logo we know today was invented. Later, the first advertising slogan appeared - “Lavazza - heaven in a cup.”

In the 1950s production expanded, the company opened workshops for frying, processing, and packaging products.

All generations of the Lavazza family were involved in the development of the business. Knowledge and experience were passed on from fathers to sons. Now the fourth generation of the dynasty is managing the company.

Supply of raw materials and production

Lavazza is the largest coffee producer. The company purchases grains all over the world and selects them on its own plantations in Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil.

The industrial system of the coffee corporation includes 6 factories in different cities:

  1. Turin (Italy). The largest roasting and packaging company.
  2. Gattinare (Italy). Production of capsules for Espresso Point coffee machines.
  3. Pozzilli (Italy). The plant specializes in the production of decaffeinated coffee.
  4. Veresse (Italy). The second largest roasting and packaging company after Turin.
  5. Chennai (India). Production for the domestic market;
  6. Sri City (India). Large production complex for supplying products to Asian countries.

Lavazza production system: numbers and geography

Founded in 1895 in the Italian city of Turin, Lavazza has been owned by the Lavazza family for 4 generations. Lavazza is one of the most important coffee roasters in the world.

Lavazza today:

More than 1.330.7 billion € in turnover in 2012 90 countries around the world in which Lavazza is present with direct subsidiaries and an extensive distribution network with more than 3,800 employees 4 Italian factories, joined by a new plant in India More than 50 training centers for worldwide, training approximately 30,000 employees annually 20 years of tradition in production, marketing and single-serve coffee products 17 billion cups of Lavazza coffee consumed annually worldwide

Lavazza's production is distributed in 6 factories, 4 of which are located in Italy and 2 abroad. The plants in Turin and Veressa roast and package roasted and ground coffee. The plant, located in Gittinara, produces capsules for the Lavazza Espresso Point, Lavazza BLUE and Lavazza A Modo Mio espresso systems. The Pozzilli plant produces decaffeinated coffee for homes, bars, cafes and offices. All Lavazza factories comply with environmental standards.

Turin: historical site

The Lavazza plant in Turin is one of the largest, modern coffee roasting and production facilities. Each stage of the production process is automated and controlled using a computer system. The plant's warehouse can accommodate between 11 and 200 pallets, moved by a computer system that can select coffees for delivery according to their production date. This guarantees optimal inventory management according to the first-pack, first-out principle: the first packaged bag of coffee is the first to leave the plant for further delivery. The Lavazza plant in Turin is ISO 9001:2008 certified.

Gittinara: automatic distribution

As mentioned above, the production of capsules for Lavazza espresso Point, Lavazza BLUE and Lavazza A Modo Mio systems is concentrated here. Lavazza has recently made major investments to improve production processes and update plant technology, as well as to develop innovative espresso systems: Espresso Point, Lavazza BLUE, A Modo Mio.

Veress: more than 20 years of experience

The Lavazza plant, located in Veresse, roasts and packages roasted and ground coffee. Lavazza came to Veress in 1989 when it acquired a majority stake in Coinca, which was based there. Today, Veressa is home to the second largest Lavazza plant in Italy, after Turin.

Pozzillini: from Italy to the world

At the Lavazza plant in Pozzillini, coffee is decaffeinated using the natural CO2 method. Founded in 1991 in Pozzillini, the plant specializes in the decaffeination of green coffee. The decaffeination method used at this plant is natural because it uses carbon dioxide, a compound that is present in the air we breathe. The innovative supercritical CO2 process has a natural selective effect on coffee beans, optimizing their organoleptic properties. Under special conditions of pressure and temperature (supercritical state between liquid and gas), carbon dioxide has the ability to bind caffeine without damaging the aromatic components of coffee.

India: new plant in Chennai

In 2007, Lavazza opened another subsidiary, thereby establishing a direct presence in Asia. At the same time, Lavazza also acquired the Indian company Barista, the second largest coffee chain with an estimated number of bars of about 180, as well as Fresh&Honest Café with traditional coffee bean machines and Lavazza BLUE capsule systems. The new Lavazza plant in Chennai caters to all the needs of the local market and produces coffee for the domestic market.

Brazil: Lavazza plant in Tres Rios

In 2008, Lavazza acquired Café Grão Nobre and Café Terra Brasil. Café Grão Nobre owns a coffee roasting plant in Tres Rios.

India: Lavazza in Sri City

In 2011, the foundation was laid for a new Lavazza plant in India. The new plant is located in the Sri City Industrial Estate, approximately 55 km from Chennai. The new industrial complex, consisting of five buildings, will be located on 40,000 sq. m. meters and will use modern machines and equipment. The plant will also include offices and training centers. This will provide jobs for the local population, which, in addition to reducing the cost of transportation, will also reduce the impact of the latter on the environment.

Lavazza's Sri City plant will source 99.9% Indian coffee, which is premium in quality and variety, but will be entirely processed by Lavazza. The construction of the new Lavazza plant in Sri City is part of Lavazza's expansion strategy in Asia. The company has been operating in India since 2007 with the Barista coffee chain and the Fresh&Honest Café company. Lavazza's vision is to transform India into a manufacturing and commercial hub, making Lavazza the leader in the Asia-Pacific region and the second most important market after Italy.

Types and description of Lavazza coffee

The range of ground coffee varies greatly in the degree of crushing of the coffee beans. The nature of grinding affects the aroma of prepared drinks and contributes to the full development of taste. You can start exploring Lavazza's extensive collection of coffee brands with the classic Lavazza Qualita Oro espresso. The Premium blend includes expensive, exquisite varieties of grains from Central and South America.

The medium roast characteristic of Lavazza Oro coffee is felt due to its floral-honey taste with the presence of a slight sourness. Brazilian grains give the Qualita Oro mix tart, sweetish notes of honey, allowing you to get incredible pleasure from the product without adding sugar to it.

The following blend consists of 100% Arabica beans. The Viennese method of roasting grains imbues the product with a mild taste. This variety, in addition to the option in standard packaging, is produced in the form of fine and medium ground coffee in Lavazza Espresso Point capsules for coffee machines.

Lavazza Qualita Rossa coffee has been considered a favorite of the inhabitants of the Apennine Peninsula for more than a hundred years. Lavazza Crema Gusto coffee is made from 30% Arabica beans and 70% Robusta. A special Italian type of roasting gives espresso strength and a spicy aroma. The composition of Lavazza Tierra coffee is enriched with selected environmentally friendly Peruvian and Colombian Arabica beans, which imbue the finished drink with a pleasant chocolate taste with floral notes.

Lavazza Gold Selection coffee is a luxury coffee blend. The highest quality, bright aroma and light creamy milky taste of this mixture are determined by the composition of Arabica beans grown on plantations in South America. The Lavazza company does not remain aloof from modern, fashionable phenomena and the latest achievements in its field, constantly expanding its own range.

The growing popularity of coffee machines motivated the brand to release a new series of coffee capsules, Lavazza Blue. They are a collection of various Arabica and Robusta mixes intended for strong drinks such as espresso and ristretto. The rich range of flavors of the capsule product may include chocolate, spicy or fruity notes.

The increased demand for a fashionable trend in the coffee industry - the production of pod coffee and coffee “tablets” - could not be ignored by the brand. How to make coffee correctly

To experience the full taste of a coffee drink, you need to know some of the subtleties of preparation, because coffee is an entire culture.

Espresso is very popular in Italy.

It is prepared in a special coffee maker called “moka” and served in small 75 ml porcelain cups with thick walls. Moreover, you need to pour no more than 50 ml of coffee. This method of serving makes it possible to experience the entire bouquet of the blend.

Coffee method
Stages of coffee preparation.

Italians often brew the drink without water. The turk is filled with 200 ml of milk, 3-4 g of ground coffee is added, sugar is offered separately.

Another popular recipe is cold cooking. Whisk milk, cold espresso, cream, sugar and serve in a glass with ice.

Counterfeits on the Russian market

There is a risk of getting a fake when purchasing. To avoid such a situation, you should pay attention to a number of signs of counterfeit:

  1. Packaging color. The original is brighter, the lines are clear.
  2. Gas removal valve. On the original it is in the center of the letter A in the word LavAzza. On a fake pack it is located lower.
  3. Side of the package. There should be no vertical fold line or fold.
  4. Bottom side of the package. The original must have a white sticker with text in Russian.
  5. Date of manufacture. The date and time are indicated on the packaging.
  6. Grains. The original varieties have a uniform color, the grains are whole and the same size.

It is safest to make purchases in specialized stores or from trusted sellers.
