Most people don't even realize that their favorite celebrities have once battled or are still battling cancer. Many of these stars choose not to make their illness public and focus on their health. Cancer has no favorites - it can affect anyone, and this list is further proof of that.

Robert DeNiro
Photo from theguardian.com His track record includes 90 films, two Oscars and a victory over prostate cancer. The actor prefers not to talk about this achievement. De Niro, 60, was diagnosed in 2003. The actor is a careful person who monitors his health and undergoes regular medical examinations. Thanks to this, the tumor, which claims a huge number of men’s lives every year, was detected at an early stage. Just a few months after the successful operation, De Niro returned to work as if nothing had happened and has since appeared in 33 more films.
Hollywood stars who beat cancer
Kylie Minogue beat breast cancer

When Kylie knew about the terrible diagnosis, she was only 36 years old. The singer was full of energy, touring Europe with her new tour and preparing to perform at the Glastonbury music festival. But, having learned about the fatal illness, Minogue left work and four days later had her first operation.
“My diagnosis then put an end to everything, it seemed to me that my life was over. All the years I was sure that this would definitely never happen to me,” said Minogue.
After the operation, she immediately began undergoing chemotherapy, which she compared “to a nuclear bomb on the scale of the human body.” Three years after the start of treatment, the performer heard good news - she was able to overcome the disease.
Kylie honestly told her fans about her experience and advised women to monitor their health and consult doctors for timely diagnosis. Interestingly, the singer really helped many of her fans, who, after her public performances, began visiting mammologists. In 2011, England's Ruskin University even awarded Kylie Minogue an honorary Doctor of Medicine for her contribution to the fight against cancer.
Michael Douglas - defeated laryngeal cancer

In 2010, the Hollywood actor was diagnosed with stage 4 laryngeal cancer. This news came as a complete surprise both to Michael himself and to his family. The actor admitted that he always monitored his health and underwent all the necessary examinations on time, but then the doctors did not find any tumor.
Despite the disappointing forecasts of doctors, Douglas managed to defeat the disease. A huge credit for this belonged to his wife, who spent days and nights at his bedside and really wanted her husband to return to a full life again.

“Michael is an incredibly courageous man. It was he who had to console and support me. Yes, yes, it was Michael who helped me become stronger. Looking back, I never cease to be amazed at the strength of his spirit. He literally pulled himself out of the clutches of the disease! And he behaved openly with children. I didn’t hide anything from them,” said Katherine.
A few years after treatment, Michael Douglas admitted that he was able to overcome the disease. He also added that now he can eat whatever he wants.
Hugh Jackman beat skin cancer

In 2013, Hugh, at the insistence of his wife, consulted a doctor who discovered he had basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. It turned out that Deborah Lee Furness noticed a strange mole on her husband's nose and persuaded her to consult a doctor. Jackman underwent several operations and was required to undergo examinations every three months.
“Now this is the norm for me. Doctors say that perhaps the cancer will appear again, and, well, if this is my cross, so be it,” said the actor.
He also addressed his fans and advised them to use special means that protect against ultraviolet rays and go for examinations more often.
Ben Stiller beat prostate cancer
Source: Legion-Media
The American actor and comedian accidentally found out about his illness when he went to see a doctor. When Ben received the verdict, he felt himself losing his composure and not understanding how to move on with his life.
“My doctor was talking about the chances of survival, impotence, how the operation would go and which one was best to choose, and I felt that his voice was becoming distant and unintelligible - just like in those movies where the guy finds out that he has cancer, only now I- it wasn’t in the movie!” - admitted Stiller.
The actor underwent surgery on time and was helped to cope with the disease. Today he continues to work actively and also monitors his health. Ben Stiller now frequently visits doctors and gets tested.
Robert De Niro beat prostate cancer

In 2003, when Robert was already 60 years old, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Fortunately, the disease was detected at an early stage, so the actor was saved. He underwent surgery on time and was prescribed the correct treatment.
Doctors noted that De Niro recovered very quickly and returned to his normal life, as he was always actively involved in sports and monitored his health.
Cynthia Nixon beat breast cancer

The Sex and the City star spoke about her illness only a few years later, when the illness had almost subsided. It turned out that in 2002, during a routine examination, Cynthia was diagnosed with breast cancer. The actress often underwent examinations, since her grandmother and mother also had to suffer a terrible disease.
“The only thing you have to be afraid of is that if you don’t go and get a mammogram because part of you doesn’t want to know the result, there might be an infection inside that will kill you,” Nixon said.
Sharon Osbourne beat colon cancer
Source: Legion-Media
But Sharon was less fortunate than her famous colleagues. When the wife of a famous musician was diagnosed with a terrible disease, doctors immediately warned that the chances of salvation were minimal, since the tumor had metastasized to the lymph nodes. But Osborne did not give up and quickly began undergoing treatment. Moreover, at this time the woman did not even interrupt the filming of her show “The Osbournes”.
“Colon cancer develops slowly, it can be detected at an early stage, then you will be saved. Just because nothing hurts doesn't mean everything is okay. When it hurts, it’s already too late!” - Sharon said.
Fortunately, she was able to cope with the disease and returned to her old life again. Now Sharon treats herself more responsibly and monitors her health.
Darya Dontsova
When she was diagnosed with a malignant tumor of the mammary gland, she was not a famous detective author, but a journalist, her name was Agrippina. One thing remained constant: an optimistic outlook on life and a sense of humor. Having felt an ominous lump in her chest, she first went to the warm seas and only then to oncologists. When I learned about the diagnosis, I decided that I would survive, no matter what. She underwent several surgeries and chemotherapy. And the disease was defeated. While in the hospital, she began writing books, the number of which today is approaching two hundred. Among them there is also a non-detective one: “I really want to live, my personal experience,” which formulates the rules for combating the disease. And in the summer, Daria Dontsova announced that she was launching, together with the Eksmo publishing house, a portal to help cancer patients.
Rod Stewart
The British singer, whose recordings sold record numbers, gained worldwide fame thanks to the unusual timbre of his voice - high, with a characteristic hoarseness. And Rod almost lost this voice, his main treasure, in 2001. Thyroid cancer. The operation was successful, but in order to get to the tumor, surgeons had to cut several muscles in the singer’s neck. This meant that Stewart would lose his voice for at least six months. And perhaps for life. The collapse of a career, the collapse of everything. Fortunately, after nine months, the voice began to slowly return - not as strong as before, but the same - signature, Stuart. After this, the singer founded a number of charitable foundations seeking treatment for various forms of cancer.
Melanie Griffith
- “Girls from the Wild West”, “Business Woman”, “Disaster Artist”, “Raising Hope”.
Famous Hollywood actress Melanie Griffith does not like to talk about the disease. The ex-wife of Antonio Banderas believes that these are purely personal problems that should not be discussed in public. But the doctors who treated the actress were apparently completely unfamiliar with the concept of “medical confidentiality.” It was from sources in medical institutions that at one time the media received information that Melanie had cancer. At first, the actress struggled with melanoma and underwent surgery to remove it in 2000, and 17 years later she was overtaken by another type of skin cancer - basal cell carcinoma. The operation was successful and Griffith can now be
Kylie Minogue
In Australia, she is practically a national hero. So the news that the 36-year-old singer and actress had breast cancer became a real national tragedy. Kylie was diagnosed abroad during a world tour, which, of course, had to be interrupted. It was necessary to go home to make sure that this was a mistake. After all, quite recently she had already been given a terrible diagnosis, but it was not confirmed. This time the doctors were not mistaken. Australian newspapers in those days wrote only about Minogue's illness, the paparazzi did not leave her alone for a second. It took the intervention of the country's prime minister himself to calm them down. But Kylie behaved calmly and reasonably. A few days after the diagnosis, she was already lying on the operating table, after which she underwent a course of chemotherapy, which she compares to “an atomic bomb exploding in the body.” She survived and calls it a miracle how quickly she recovered and began performing and recording music again.
Lisa Vanderpump
- “Malibu Nights”, “Silk Networks”, “Bodyguard for Hire”, “Moon Killers”.
Not all celebrities advertise their illness. The public learned that British actress Lisa Vanderpump was diagnosed with cancer after her recovery. When the disease was defeated, Lisa wrote on social networks that nothing was found during the last biopsy, which means she had overcome a severe form of skin cancer. After her miraculous recovery, the woman constantly reminds fans that it is very important to constantly check your health for prevention and to be exposed to direct sunlight as little as possible.
Alexander Buynov
The singer does not like to talk about his illness. “Something was cut out for me there,” he says with a chuckle. There is even a legend in the media that Buinov had no idea what exactly was being cut out for him. The “something” was a prostate tumor. And frivolity, of course, is image-based, feigned. Indeed, in those terrible days, while undergoing chemotherapy, Buinov did not stop performing, and the audience merrily clapped their hands, unaware of the suffering the artist was experiencing. For his recovery, he thanks the doctors and his wife, whose support was enormous. She insisted on visiting doctors, she was in the hospital with her husband, protecting him from journalists and other uninvited visitors.
Cynthia Nixon beat breast cancer in 2002
The performer of the role of Miranda in the series “Sex and the City” fell ill with breast cancer in 2002. She did not want to create a fuss and told reporters about her illness only a few years after her recovery. She later played in a theater production of Margaret Edson's play "Wit" as poetry teacher Vivian Bearing, a cancer patient. For this role, the actress shaved her head.
Lance Armstrong
At the age of 25, this American cyclist was already a legend of the sport. And just then, during the next medical examination, it was like a blow to the head: “You have testicular cancer, stage three.” It wasn't all bad news. The disease managed to spread to the abdominal cavity, lungs and brain. It would seem that the only thing left for Lance was to say goodbye to the fans and wait for the end. But the doctors cheated. Knowing that the athlete had practically no chance, they said that the probability of recovery was 20-50%. After all, they also knew that Armstrong was not used to losing. The trick worked. Lance rushed into battle: surgery, courses of powerful “chemistry,” another operation, more “chemistry,” unconventional methods of treatment invented by himself... He always believed that he would return to competition again, even when his contract was terminated. Armstrong won this time too. He described his recovery story in a book and founded the Livestrong Foundation to help cancer patients.
Sheryl Crow
When the singer was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 44, she smiled sadly. And not a month has passed since they broke up with their fiancé, cyclist Lance Armstrong. Well, she will fight too. The decision was followed by surgery and seven weeks of radiation therapy. Cheryl believes that every adversity holds an invaluable life lesson. The wisdom she learned was that one should put oneself in the very last place in the list of life values. Having recovered, Cheryl decided to completely change her life. She bought a new house and adopted two wonderful boys. Today she is happier than ever and tries never to think about her illness. It was a terrible experience, but it was because of it that she began to live in a new way.
How celebrities fight cancer
In the next five years, Russian authorities will spend about one trillion rubles to fight cancer. However, these expenses will be useless if people do not stop thinking that cancer cannot be defeated
Rumors about the "beautiful nanny"
In recent days, Internet users have been actively discussing information about an oncological disease that doctors allegedly discovered in actress Anastasia Zavorotnyuk, known from the popular TV series “My Fair Nanny.” They even call it a terrible diagnosis – brain cancer. It was from this that another famous artist, singer Zhanna Friske, died in 2015.
It is not yet clear how serious everything is. But, as you know, “there is no smoke without fire.” Concert director Zavorotnyuk Stas Hristov said that the actress will appear on one of the federal television channels to talk about her health. He noted that the information that appeared in the media was “not a rumor.”
Zavorotnyuk is now 48 years old. Zhanna Friske was 40 at the time of her death. A year ago, in her marriage to figure skater Pyotr Chernyshev, Anastasia had a daughter, Mila. Now many fans associate this fact with reports of the actress’s illness. After all, Friske’s first symptoms of the disease appeared when she was pregnant. After the birth of her son Plato, she was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an inoperable brain tumor. The disappointing verdict was confirmed by the country's chief oncologist, Mikhail Davydov.

The singer was treated in the USA, China, Russia, and underwent rehabilitation in Jurmala. However, in the spring of 2015, her condition deteriorated sharply. For the last three months, Friske has been in a coma. She died without regaining consciousness on June 15 of the same year. Fans of Anastasia Zavorotnyuk are afraid that their favorite actress may have the same terrible diagnosis. Apparently, only Anastasia herself will tell the truth.
Got fat and lost weight again
TV presenter and journalist, general producer of the Spas TV channel Boris Korchevnikov has been struggling with a serious illness for several years. Regular viewers of the program “The Fate of a Man” could not help but notice that he had gained a lot of weight. As it turned out, the reason was the long course of treatment that Korchevnikov had to resort to. In one of the episodes of the program a couple of months ago, he decided to open up and said that he had gained excess weight precisely because of this.
It's all over now, I'm on the mend. But I had to read so many unkind things about myself: how I became fat. I had the strength to deal with it with a smile,
– the presenter shared.
Korchevnikov did not name the diagnosis, but back in 2015 he admitted that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor, or more precisely, on the auditory nerve. The TV presenter constantly had a noise in his ears. He underwent an MRI, based on the study, and a diagnosis was made. After this there was an operation, which was successful.

It seems that the host of “The Fate of Man” managed to lose weight. Judging by the photographs from the studio of the program, for which singer Stas Kostyushkin and his wife came to filming, Korchevnikov lost a lot of kilograms.

The duration of illness is the key to the result
Many people are accustomed to thinking that cancer is a death sentence. But not every tumor is fatal, especially if it is benign. For example, as in the case of Korchevnikov. People unknowingly call any formation “cancer,” although, of course, this is not true. Early diagnosis of the disease is very important. And even if the study shows that you have a tumor and it is malignant, the likelihood of a favorable treatment outcome will depend on how early it was detected. If the disease was diagnosed at too late a stage, then the chances are much less. However, in this case, you should not despair; under no circumstances should you give up.
It is also very important to remember that cancer can develop at any age, including very young children. Of course, with age, the likelihood of their occurrence only increases, but this does not mean that you need to turn on the vigilance mode only after 50 years. It must be turned on at all times. It is necessary to listen to your body and, if there is sufficient reason for concern, immediately consult a doctor.
Key symptoms you need to know
Photo: Leonardo da/ Shutterstock.com
Of course, each type of cancer has its own warning signs. However, we can list the main symptoms that are characteristic of several types of disease or occur most often. Doctor of Medical Sciences, researcher at the Department of Clinical Oncology of the Rogachev Rogachev Federal Scientific Center for Pediatric Orthopedics and Pediatric Orthopedics, listed these in an interview with the Profile publication.
- Any unusual bleeding or discharge.
- Lumps or thickening on any part of the body, including the mammary gland, should not be ignored.
- Any ulcer that does not heal over a long period of time.
- Disturbances in bowel and/or bladder emptying.
- Hoarse voice and/or prolonged cough.
- Systematic indigestion or difficulty swallowing food
- Any noticeable change in the wart or mole.
The specialist also noted that in the modern world cancer has ceased to be a fatal disease, including in Russia. According to him, diagnostic and clinical oncology is developing better and better in our country. Abashin cited the fact that qualified specialists are available not only in cities, but also in regional centers as one evidence of this. So-called oncology curators are being introduced into the healthcare system - they are responsible for detecting cancer in patients as early as possible.
Profiting from the fear of cancer
At the same time, the question of how to correctly and timely diagnose cancer is quite acute. According to some experts, medical centers are deliberately profiting from the so-called cancerophobia (from the English cancer - cancer, note Tsargrad).
Aleksey Khukhrev, deputy head physician for the medical unit of the 71st city hospital of the capital’s Department of Health, in a conversation with Tsargrad, noted that 99% of tests for tumor markers are unnecessary. The fact is that in the overwhelming majority of cases, if an analysis can be shown by such a test, then it is also determined clinically. If there is no cancer, then the tumor markers will show a negative result. “And the most interesting thing is when the results are borderline. And then everyone starts walking on the walls. The patient - because he is afraid. And the doctor – because the patient bothers him, and he doesn’t know what to tell him,” explains Khukhrev. According to the expert, this whole situation causes not only financial harm, primarily emptying the patient’s wallet, but also reputational harm to the Russian healthcare system itself.

Anything unusual deserves attention
It is also very important to remember that it is not the oncologist who is involved in the early diagnosis of cancer, but general practitioners. If we are talking, for example, about breast cancer, then this is a mammologist. If about lung cancer - a pulmonologist or a phthisiatrician, and so on. It is necessary to draw the attention of doctors to any symptoms that are uncharacteristic of your usual state of health, especially if they do not fit into the patterns of usual diseases. When it comes to cancer, one can truly say that it is better to be “over-safe than under-safe.” If the slightest suspicion arises, you need to get checked - it’s better that there is no tumor than that it is discovered, but at a late stage.
Winners in an unequal battle
Hundreds of thousands of people manage to beat cancer. We mostly only learn about celebrities. But it is they who become a real example of courage and perseverance of character. Some may say that they have money, it’s easier for them. But, as practice shows, this is not a guarantee at all. Here are some stars who persevered when faced with such a serious challenge as cancer. Some of them are quite young.
- Actor Emmanuil Vitorgan – lung cancer, first diagnosed more than 25 years ago.
- Singer Yulia Volkova (ex-soloist of the Tatu group) – thyroid cancer.
- Actor Andrey Gaidulyan (TV series “Univer”, “SashaTanya”) – Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
- Singer Vladimir Levkin (group “Na-na”) – cancer of the lymphatic system.
- Writer Daria Dontsova defeated breast cancer.
- And also Vladimir Pozner, Alexander Buynov, Svetlana Surganova, Laima Vaikule, Yuri Nikolaev and many others.
Foreign celebrities include Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie, Michael Douglas, Rod Stewart, Kylie Minogue, and Hugh Jackman.
Be vigilant and monitor your health.
Emmanuel Vitorgan
The artist learned that he had lung cancer only after the operation. Knowing his character, his wife and friends protected Vitorgan from bad news, saying that it was tuberculosis. Having learned about the diagnosis after the fact, he quickly recovered, returned to work, and quit smoking (although he later took up smoking again). 20 years have passed and he is healthy. “For those who are fighting cancer, I can say for sure: the disease is conquerable, what helps is your own faith in recovery and the love of loved ones,” says the actor.
Dr. Drew

“Star Doctor” Drew Pinsky is always ready to help patients, so it’s hard to believe that he himself is not doing well with his health. But he is a person, not just a picture on a screen, and his problems are the same as ours. The doctor and host of popular shows was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but, fortunately, the operation saved his life and freed him from the terrible disease.
Michael Douglas
Stage 4 cancer is what doctors told him in 2010. Douglas was in despair. The most annoying thing is that three previous examinations showed that he did not have any malignant tumors in his throat. That's how it was, however. The cancer attacked his tongue. Douglas decided that he would fight to the last and immediately began courses of radiation and chemotherapy. The latter, according to the actor’s recollections, forced him to go through all the circles of hell. He lost 20 kg and looked like a pale shadow of himself, but without surgery. An actor cannot remain without a language. Now he is in remission, doctors do not hide that the chance of relapse is high, but Douglas is determined and confident that he will defeat the disease again.
Michael C Hall

When mentioning this actor, one cannot help but recall his most famous role - Dexter Morgan in the series of the same name. And in the minds of many, Dexter Morgan remains invincible. That’s why it was so difficult for fans to come to terms with the actor’s terrible diagnosis. In 2010, Hall's representative announced that he was being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma. That same year, he won a Golden Globe, beat cancer and returned to the role of Dexter.
Laima Vaikule
Almost 30 years ago, Laima Vaikule suffered from breast cancer. The doctors insisted on the operation, although they honestly said that the chances of success were extremely low. “Why bother then?” thought Laima, and for a long time she refused surgery, and instead of receiving treatment, she wrote farewell letters to her loved ones. She began to experience depression and panic attacks. Dying is scary. In the end, the singer agreed to the operation, which turned out to be successful. Laima says that the disease helped her rethink many things in life. What seemed valuable and important faded into the background, and the most important things became faith in God, the love of loved ones and simply life.
Dustin Hoffman
- "Rain Man", "Tootsie", "Kramer vs. Kramer", "Midnight Cowboy".
Dustin Hoffman doesn't like to talk about his illness and doesn't make a show of his recovery. It is only known that the disease was detected at an early stage, and the actor completed treatment in 2012, when Hoffman was 75 years old. Information about what form of cancer the Hollywood actor had is considered confidential. Surgery helped Dustin recover from cancer.
Sharon Osbourne
She is best known as the wife of the frantic rock singer Ozzy Osbourne and a participant in the reality show “The Osbournes” about family life. When Sharon was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2002, she insisted that the show not be interrupted: she wanted the viewer to see her struggle with the disease. Sharon underwent surgery, several courses of chemotherapy, and the cancer did not give up for a long time. Everything was so difficult and scary that her son, unable to withstand the stress, tried to commit suicide. Mrs. Osbourne endured everything, and when the disease subsided, she created a program to help patients with colon cancer (Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program). She often speaks about her illness and recovery, raising money for cancer research.
Chasing Life: Celebrities Who Fight Cancer
Every year the number of people suffering from cancer increases. Celebrities are no exception. Even money and numerous acquaintances sometimes do not help in the fight against this disease. 5-tv.ru tells which of the Russian and foreign stars is fighting cancer.
Shannen Doherty
The star of the television series “Beverly Hills, 9020010” and “Charmed” received a terrible diagnosis in 2015. Since then, the actress has been battling breast cancer. Doherty learned about her illness too late: at that time, the cancer had already metastasized to the lymphatic system. Shannen blamed her former manager for the neglect of her condition, who incorrectly signed up for her health insurance.

In 2016, the actress underwent several difficult procedures: mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A year later, the cancer receded and Shannen Doherty reported remission, but in 2020 the disease returned. The actress announced this on the Good Morning America talk show.
Victor Rybin and Natalya Senchukova
In 2018, on the TV show “Secret to a Million,” the star couple said that they were fighting basal cell skin cancer. Natalya Senchukova first noticed the ailments when a strange spot appeared on her leg in 2015. A year and a half later, Viktor Rybin found a similar spot on his face. The singer said that he addressed the problem to a cosmetologist, who removed the defect with a laser, but soon the tumor returned to its original place.

The couple had no choice but to see a doctor and undergo a biopsy, which confirmed their worst assumptions. On the air of Boris Korchevnikov’s program, Rybin and Senchukova reported that the cancer had not yet gone away, but they were undergoing radiation therapy courses.
Hugh Jackman
The 51-year-old actor has been battling a type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, since 2013. He went to the doctor after his wife advised him to remove a wart from his nose. After being examined by doctors and taking material for a biopsy, it turned out that Hugh had a malignant tumor. Jackman's tumor has been removed several times already, but it comes back again and again.
Photo: TASS / ZUMA
The last operation to remove a cancerous tumor on the nose took place in 2017, it became the sixth for the X-Men star. Hugh Jackman also went through several rounds of chemotherapy. Due to the diagnosis, the actor fell into depression, but got out of it thanks to his wife Deborra-Lee Furness and sons Oscar and Ava. Since then, Jackman has been promoting the mandatory use of creams with a high degree of sun protection, especially among his fellow Australians.
Alexandra Yakovleva
The actress, popular in Soviet times, and star of the film “Crew” admitted in 2019 that she had been battling breast cancer for two years. On the air of one of the television programs, Yakovleva said that she learned about the disease by accident, when she went to the doctor because of problems with coordination of movements.
Photo: TASS / Alexander Kurov
Due to deterioration in health due to chemotherapy, she could not walk. Now Yakovleva has completed 20 courses of chemotherapy, the disease is receding, and the actress hopes for a quick remission.
Valentin Yudashkin
In 2016, the Russian couturier was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Yudashkin was tormented by frequent pain in the abdominal area, but due to untimely consultation with a doctor, he neglected his condition. In order to overcome the disease, Valentin had to remove one kidney and part of a lung, which at the time of the operation were affected by metastases.
Photo: TASS / Alexander Shcherbak
At the beginning of 2019, the designer experienced problems with speech and lost a lot of weight. Now Valentin Yudashkin continues to fight the disease and is undergoing chemotherapy courses.
Barbara Brylska
The Polish actress does not like to discuss her illness. In an interview with StarHit, Brylska said that she was fighting cancer, but she did not specify which one. However, according to rumors, Barbara suffers from tongue cancer. The artist herself neither denied nor confirmed this information. But she noted that doctors give good prognoses for her recovery.
Photo: TASS / ZUMA
Previously, the actress experienced back problems. Because of sciatica, Barbara even had to hire a caregiver to help her move around and do housework.
Kathy Bates
The Oscar-winning actress and director beat cancer twice. In 2003, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was lucky - the tumor was noticed at an early stage, otherwise it would have spread to the intestines. After surgery and medication, Katie was healthy. She began filming the next film when the course of chemotherapy was not yet completed. But in 2012, she again had to work closely with oncologists, this time a malignant tumor formed in the breast. She immediately went under the surgeon’s knife, who removed both mammary glands from the actress. Bates knew that it was impossible to hesitate and flirt with the disease: in her family, a rare woman avoided breast cancer, and her aunt died from it. Now the actress is actively involved in social work, urging women to carefully undergo examinations so that the disease can be detected at an early stage.
Anastacia (49)
In 2003, the singer decided to have her breasts reduced: her back was very painful. But upon examination it turned out that she had breast cancer. Anastacia underwent an urgent seven-hour operation to remove the tumor and radiotherapy. But in 2013 the cancer returned. Then the singer underwent a double mastectomy and had her breasts removed. And in November 2016, she starred in a candid photo shoot for Fault magazine and showed off her scars: “I was nervous that people would see what I really look like, but let everyone know, and I will be free and can finally go quietly to the beach and undress in public. And let the first photographs of my back be taken by a professional photographer, and not by paparazzi who did not receive permission to do so.”
Vladimir Pozner
Vladimir Pozner received an oncological “verdict” in 1993. The tumor was detected at an early stage, so the TV presenter managed to avoid chemotherapy. After the operation, the cancer was defeated. Posner noted that he owed his recovery to the support of his family. Those close to us acted as if nothing terrible was happening. It is no secret that excessive “sympathy” from others has a detrimental effect on cancer patients. More than 20 years have passed since then. Posner undergoes regular tests and advocates for others to follow his example. In 2013, he was awarded the title of ambassador to the international program “Together against Cancer”.
John McCain

Losing the presidential election wasn't the worst thing that happened to John McCain. The former Republican candidate for US President had been battling skin cancer for a long time - the first symptoms appeared back in 1993. John McCain has really been through a lot - by 2008 he had already survived four melanomas, so that year's election was far from the most stressful situation in his life.
Michael Carlisle Hall
The actor learned that he had Hodgkin's lymphoma during the filming of the fourth season of the TV series "Dexter", where he played the main role. I didn’t say anything to anyone so as not to interrupt work. He remained as cheerful, full of jokes and optimism as always. Meanwhile, he was 38; his father died of the same disease at 39... Michael began chemotherapy only after filming was completed. And then – here’s the problem! - He was awarded the Golden Globe Award. As a result of the treatment, Hall is already completely bald. I had to go to the ceremony in a black cap - and reveal my terrible secret. Then the actor admitted that he was glad about what happened: this gave him the opportunity to cheer up those who were scared and instill hope in those who were sick. Today Hall is healthy and continues to act in films.
Svetlana Surganova
Svetlana is a pediatrician by training, so she began to guess about her illness long before she was actually diagnosed. But, even despite the clearly manifested symptoms of oncology, she was in no hurry to seek medical help, she was afraid that she would have to undergo a lot of unpleasant examinations. Everything was decided by chance: one day, while visiting, the girl lifted a 16-kilogram weight and felt very unwell. The singer was taken to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. The artist had to undergo emergency surgery. Before Surganova had time to recover from the first surgical intervention, another one was required two weeks later. By that time, Svetlana had lost weight to 43 kg, her body was severely exhausted, so doctors did not give any guarantees. But the girl was ready to fight the disease, and she was supported by friends and family. “First of all, many thanks to Dinka (Diana Arbenina - editor's note), who did not leave a single step, spent days and nights in the hospital, supported me in every possible way. She read Pelevin , “The Life of Insects,” Svetlana said in an interview with Mikhail Kozyrev.

Surganova returned to the stage literally three months after the second operation. It wasn't easy because they not only cut off half of her intestine, but also made a hole in it: a stoma. “You stick a bag in which you go to the toilet, and you go on tour,” the artist later recalled. However, she could not refuse concerts; she had to earn money. When she gave up, Svetlana remembered the Soviet actress Glikeria Bogdanova-Chesnokova, who suffered a similar disease, but despite this, she went on stage and continued acting in films, but at that time there were no normal devices that could help the patient live with stoma. Svetlana won a complete victory over cancer in 2005, when she had another operation and was able to forget about the ostomy. The singer is convinced that she was able to overcome her illness thanks to the fact that she did not close herself off from her loved ones and allowed them to be nearby even in those moments when she wanted to be alone.

The fight against lymphoma: which celebrities defeated this disease
Joseph Kobzon
Singer Larisa Dolina said about Joseph Kobzon in 2009: “He has such strength of character, such willpower and such a thirst for life that he outwitted everything. He outsmarted death. Five days after the most difficult operation, he comes to Jurmala, goes on stage, sings live.” This was already the second oncological operation in Germany; the singer underwent the first one there, in 2005. It led to health complications: decreased immunity, a blood clot in the lungs, inflammation of the kidney tissue... But Kobzon continued and continues to stubbornly undergo treatment - as evil tongues note, “exclusively abroad.” In September of this year, he underwent treatment in Italy: “there was a council of doctors who are treating me, and they noted that the best device for treating my illness is in Italy,” says Kobzon. Can we say that the story of the favorite of the Soviet people has a happy ending? He is 78. He has been living with the diagnosis for almost 15 years. In 2012, he was sure that his days were numbered and said goodbye to the public. But he is alive and continues to sing. Just the other day I performed at the White Cane festival at the Ermolova Theater. Sang a duet with a blind boy. Which song? Of course, “I love you, life!”

“After such an operation they immediately start talking to the patient. I woke up, the doctor began to ask me questions, but I could not answer anything. Nothing at all. I’m trying to say something, but it doesn’t work, instead of sounds there’s some kind of hissing, there’s no voice at all. It turned out that the doctor touched the vocal cord,” the singer shared.

“We immediately asked: “Is there any salvation for us?” We were told that we needed to resort to radiation therapy. I have already had only the external manifestation of cancer removed, this very spot, but the problem is much more serious, deeper. A close friend insisted that she consult another doctor, who began treatment. Daria underwent four surgeries and 18 courses of chemotherapy.
“The diagnosis is not terrible. It's just a diagnosis. I really don’t like it when journalists automatically attach “terrible, terrible, incurable, nightmare” to oncology. No, it’s just a disease,” Dontsova said in an interview.
It was during this period that she began to do what had always interested her - writing books. Having defeated the disease, the writer released the work “I Really Want to Live,” in which she talked about how she struggled with the disease for five years.

In addition, he is sure that illnesses are retribution for sins. Despite the illness, Buinov did not even think about suffering, and after the operation he continued to perform on stage, while undergoing rehabilitation at the same time. “Yes, it’s an unpleasant thing, but I didn’t feel like I was dying. For some reason I was sure: everything would be fine,” said the singer.
