Coffee with garlic according to a recipe from Stirlitz: we didn’t believe it, but it turned out to be delicious

Coffee with garlic cannot be called a new product: this recipe has been around for hundreds of years. However, not everyone is still familiar with this combination, and some even cringe at it. However, coffee and garlic are more relevant now than ever before. When we really need strong immunity and a good mood.

We remembered the spy novel by Yulian Semenov, where he described the recipe for the legendary drink, and tried to reproduce our own. With the help of our expert tea tester, Russian champion in tea mixology Natalia Prokhorenko.

Coffee from the author Stirlitz

Let us recall that in 1985, the first part of the spy trilogy “Expansion” by Yulian Semenov about the work of the Soviet intelligence officer Stirlitz was published, and in it the writer casually mentioned an unusual way of brewing coffee, allegedly imported from Turkey. This is how the outlandish recipe found its way to the hearts of Soviet coffee lovers, despite all its strangeness and the seemingly incompatible ingredients:

Quote from the book by Yu. Semenov “Expansion-I. Along the razor's edge"

In fact, it’s difficult to say for sure exactly where the idea of making coffee with garlic came from: maybe from Turkey, or maybe from Tibet. Now this is not important, but how healthy it is and how tasty it is. We decided to check whether coffee “from Stirlitz” is really drinkable and how to prepare it correctly. And since the writer did not leave us specific instructions, we entrusted the reconstruction of the recipe to our own expert.

Author's recipe for coffee with garlic (with video)

  • 1 clove garlic (medium size)
  • Cane sugar (to taste)
  • Ground coffee (fine grind)
  • Water in the ratio of 200 ml per 16 g of coffee

Crush the garlic with a knife and put it on the bottom of the pot, pour sugar on top and put it on the fire. When the sugar begins to caramelize, pour water up to the middle of the cup and add ground coffee. After this, you can mix everything and add water to the narrow neck. As soon as a lush foam rises, the Turk needs to be removed from the heat and pour the coffee into cups. If done correctly, the garlic flavor will disappear completely, leaving behind only savory, spicy notes, just like you would if you brewed spiced coffee.

Coffee brewed according to this recipe does not leave a garlic smell either in the cup or in the Turk. And it does not affect the freshness of your breath in any way.

Benefits of coffee with garlic

You probably know everything about the benefits of coffee yourself, since you are reading this article. Add garlic to the list - a natural antibiotic and antiviral agent.

Garlic contains useful substances that help resist various diseases (for example, phytoncides

kill bacteria and inhibit their growth,
allicin
is an antioxidant), and generally strengthen the immune system.
Each clove gives us vitamins C, K, PP
and
group B
, a large number of microelements (
potassium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, iodine, selenium,
etc.). Garlic is also good as an expectorant and antipyretic, and can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

However, you need to remember about individual intolerance and various contraindications for certain diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and liver.

But the most interesting thing is that garlic (unlike many other plants) is quite resistant to heat treatment: it, of course, loses its beneficial properties if it is cooked for a long time (allicin is gradually destroyed), however, we repeat, this happens quite slowly . And while the coffee is being prepared, this definitely won’t happen.

Overall, we tried this unusual recipe and found it very tasty. And Stirlitz, by the way, too:

Classic recipe

For the traditional version you will need the following components:

  • 200 ml water;
  • 1 tsp. ground coffee beans;
  • 1 tsp. honey;
  • thin clove of garlic;
  • lemon wedge for garnish.

Honey-garlic coffee is prepared according to the following algorithm:

  1. Place the required amount of crushed coffee beans and a very thin garlic strip cut from a medium clove about 2 cm long into the cezve.
  2. Boil water separately and cool slightly.
  3. Pour the cooled liquid into the Turk and place it on the stove again.
  4. Bring to a boil three times, but do not boil, otherwise the drink will lose its aroma.
  5. Pour the contents of the container into a mug, add honey there without stirring.
  6. Wait until the sweet product melts in the hot coffee.
  7. Before serving, garnish with a slice of lemon, which will add an original flavor to the drink.

Please note that honey retains its beneficial properties only at temperatures not exceeding 60 degrees. Otherwise, the treat will become a regular sweetener and lose its quality.

You can preserve the antiviral and protective functions of such coffee as much as possible in the following way: mash a clove of garlic into a cup, pour the brewed drink and drink it with honey. It will be very tasty and healthy.
