History of the coffee holiday

Where exactly and when exactly the coffee holiday appeared has not yet been established, but it is reliably known that official events in honor of this magnificent drink took place in 1983 in Japan, and the local coffee association took the initiative to hold them. This event happened, by the way, on October 1st.

At the beginning of the 21st century, coffee holidays took place in several European countries, but the tradition of celebrating them had not yet arisen. This is largely why there was no single date for it until the International Coffee Association took control of this matter. It was she who, in 2014, decided to annually celebrate International Coffee Day on October 1.

It should be noted that this holiday immediately became popular in several countries, not only in those where it is grown, but also in those where its most active consumers live. Therefore, the Japanese, residents of Scandinavia and the United States of America very willingly joined in the celebrations. In principle, this holiday is planned to be officially celebrated in all countries of the world that are members of the International Coffee Association. Now there are 75 of them, and Russia is among them.

September 29 in the USA

For the first time in New Orleans, a festival dedicated to coffee was held in 2009. Afterwards, it was customary to celebrate the holiday throughout the country. Americans celebrate the day on a grand scale: a coffee carnival, shows, concerts, and drink tastings.

October 1 in Austria, Germany and Japan

Some particularly disciplined countries celebrate coffee day in the prescribed manner, October 1st.

Large coffee fairs are held in Japan, with big discounts on the drink for visitors to cafes and restaurants.

In Austria and Germany, residents are trying new coffee recipes, eating it all with apple strudel.

There is no such holiday officially in Russia yet. I think that in the near future the situation will change, because despite the popular love for tea, Russians often drink coffee.

To date, no exact date has been chosen for celebrating Coffee Day in Russia , although the choice of October 1 would seem quite logical.

The history of the holiday in Russia is very diverse.

Since 2003, the International Coffee and Tea Festival has been celebrated in Moscow in the last days of May. The organizers decided to celebrate Coffee Day according to the Brazilian calendar, taking into account the warm weather of the last days of spring. On this day, tastings, auctions, fairs, sales, concert performances, and various shows are held in open areas.

Similar festivals are held in the northern capital, but at the end of summer. Apparently, celebrating coffee over the course of several festival days was not enough for St. Petersburg residents, as they decided to open an entire Coffee Museum, which regularly hosts themed events, including tastings and barista championships.

In 2009, Yekaterinburg was also included in the list of cities celebrating Coffee Day. The festival program is constantly updated with new interesting events: quizzes, tastings of aromatic drinks, coffee marathons.

International Coffee Day will be officially celebrated on October 1 – ICO

Mr. Roberio Oliveira Silva, who is the executive director of the ICO (International Coffee Organization), said that International Coffee Day will now officially be celebrated on October 1st.

On this day, celebrations will be held in honor of this divine drink. This will be a real day of quality and love for coffee. As part of the celebrations, participants - gourmets and connoisseurs of real coffee - will be able to share with each other their passions, recipes, and will also be able to participate in supporting farmers, whose income directly depends on the harvest and subsequent sale of coffee .

It is worth noting that National Coffee Day is celebrated in many countries, and not even for a single year. Perhaps this prompted the countries that are members of the International Organization ICO to set aside a single day of the year for the celebration. Another important event is timed to coincide with the first official celebration - the 115th session of the International Coffee Council is planned. Also scheduled for October 1 is the 1st Global Coffee Forum (GCF). Both events will take place as part of Expo Milano 2015.

On the eve of such a large-scale event, a unique agreement was signed between the ICO and Oxfam (an international non-profit organization). We are talking about introducing the Italian tradition of paying for two cups of coffee at once, even if you buy only one. The charity event “Caffè Sospeso against poverty” allows coffee connoisseurs to show solidarity with small coffee companies by paying for the second cup of the drink. This promotion will be valid worldwide, and you can pay using the Oxfam online service.

The official partners of the event are the leading associations of the world: the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe, the European Coffee Federation, the All Japan Coffee Association, the American Specialty Coffee Association of America) and many others. All preparatory work and organization of the holiday on the territory of Russia will be carried out by the Roschaykofe association.

Let us recall that the Roschaykofe association was founded in 1999 on the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation. The relationship and work of the two departments is carried out on the basis of a special agreement. The association includes major coffee and tea suppliers and operators of the country.

International Coffee Day

Today is International Coffee Day. The Italians set the date (they call it Espresso Day).

At first, raw berries were used to prepare the drink. Then they learned to identify ripe fruits, dry them and use only the pulp.

The ancient Arabs used coffee beans mixed with fat and milk (in the form of balls) as a general tonic.

The first specialized coffee shop was opened in 1475 in Constantinople. Almost a century later, the first public coffee shop appeared there.

The first attempt to ban the drink occurred in the Ottoman Empire in 1511.

In Russia, for a long time, coffee was considered a cure for migraines and a number of other diseases.

Sovereigns and politicians set the tone for fashion. Since the reign of Peter I, the era of coffee consumption in Russia began. Later, Empress Anna Ioannovna fell in love with coffee and even opened the first coffee house in Russia. This happened in 1740. Catherine II preferred a very strong drink. To prepare five cups of coffee, the court chefs used almost 400 grams of ground beans.

The people's dislike of coffee continued until the War of 1812. Only when Russian troops entered Europe did it become obvious that almost all Europeans drink coffee and that this drink is quite pleasant to the taste and has a tonic effect.

Later, the fashion for coffee came to Moscow and St. Petersburg. He was preferred by the entire creative intelligentsia.

At the end of the 19th century, coffee was already drunk in almost every home, and female servants, when entering work, negotiated the so-called “coffee allowance,” which included pounds of coffee beans per month.

An important event for coffee in Russia was 1884. This year, an international horticulture exhibition was held in St. Petersburg, where Brazilian farmers presented more than 1000 varieties of coffee.

Despite the enormous popularity of coffee at the beginning of the 20th century, it still remained very expensive and was available for daily consumption only to fairly wealthy people. Later, coffee became more accessible, but practically disappeared from store shelves after the Great Patriotic War. Only towards the end of the 20th century was the import of coffee into Russia established and the beans of the favorite drink filled shops and coffee shops throughout the country.

1. Coffee as an aid to weight loss. Black coffee is an excellent appetite blocker. When dieting, it is better to drink coffee from 12 to 17 o'clock, but do not replace lunch or dinner with a cup of coffee - this can lead to stomach problems.

2. Coffee as a fighter against cellulite An excellent way to combat cellulite is coffee wraps. We brew coffee, apply the grounds to problem areas and wrap them in cling film to enhance the thermal effect, wait 15 minutes and wash off. We do this procedure 2 times a week. An anti-cellulite scrub made from ground coffee helps get rid of cellulite. Apply ground coffee beans along with shower gel to problem areas, wait 15 minutes and rinse off.

3. Coffee as an assistant for facial skin A mask of coffee, honey and sour cream gives an excellent lifting effect. You will need 1 tsp. coffee grounds, sour cream, honey and 2 beaten egg whites. Mix all ingredients and apply to face for 20 minutes. After that, rinse off. Peeling from coffee and honey. 1 tbsp. ground coffee and olive oil, 12 tsp honey, Apply to face in circular motions for 1 minute then rinse.
