Frappuccino coffee: recipe, composition, preparation

What is a Frappuccino

The recipe for this coffee itself is not new. Mixing coffee and milk began long before the emergence of chain coffee shops. The novelty was that crushed ice was added to the mixture of coffee and milk and all the ingredients were whipped until foam was obtained. The creators were clearly inspired by the traditional American drink “granita” for this recipe. It is made from frozen fruit juice by breaking the ice into fine crumbs.

Frappuccino is a drink made from coffee, milk, syrup and crushed ice, whipped until foamy and topped with whipped cream.

  • The name is formed from two words: the French “frappe”, which means chilled, and the well-known “cappuccino”.
  • The name first appeared on the menu of one of the chain coffee shops in the United States back in the early 90s, but in 1994 the establishments were absorbed by Starbucks, and since 1995 the name of the recipe and the name of the Frappuccino itself belong to Starbucks.
  • Frappuccino is a registered trademark.
  • Frappuccino base is espresso, low-fat milk, topping and crushed ice, garnished with whipped cream.
  • The topping can be anything, and the choice of it changes the taste of the finished drink - chocolate, strawberry, lemon, banana.

Frappuccino: varieties

Despite its small age, or perhaps because of it, the recipe has many variations. Some of them will definitely catch your eye on the menu of Starbucks or other coffee shops.

  • Light Frappuccino . To make it, skim milk and vegetable cream of minimal fat content are used, so the calorie content of the drink is lower than in the classic recipe.
  • Decaf Frappuccino . It contains decaffeinated coffee.
  • Frappuccino cream . It's more of a dessert. It contains no coffee at all. But there is a sweet cream, similar to pudding, and milk frothed with a cappuccino maker.
  • Vegetarian Frappuccino . In it, cow's milk is replaced with soy or coconut milk, and instead of regular cream, they take those made with vegetable fat.
  • Tazoberi Frappuccino . This drink is another proprietary recipe from Starbucks. It replaces coffee with Tazo's signature tea. It is complemented by a mixture of juices and fruit syrups.

The name of a Frappuccino may contain the following words: currant, raspberry, caramel or cherry. They refer to the syrup that is included in the recipe. The Mocha Frappuccino is a drink with chocolate topping.

How to make different types of Frappuccino at home?

You can only buy a portion of this delicious cold drink at Starbucks coffee shops, but, fortunately, you can make Frappuccino at home. To do this, you will only need to purchase all the necessary ingredients: whipped cream, syrups: raspberry, blackcurrant, strawberry and others, as well as chocolate if you decide to make a real Mocha Frappuccino. You will also definitely need a blender. You can use a mixer or any other technique. But whipping the drink to the desired consistency by hand will be quite difficult.

Next, we will talk about how to prepare different versions of this drink at home yourself.

Vanilla Frappuccino

To prepare it, you will need the same ingredients as for the classic recipe, as well as vanilla syrup or regular cooking vanillin. Coffee can be brewed in a cezve (Turk) or using a French press. Be sure to strain it so that no grounds get into the cocktail!

Then pour it into the blender bowl, add vanilla or appropriate syrup, milk, ice cubes and sugar. Whisk the ingredients, pour into a glass and place whipped cream on top of the drink. You can decorate the top with nut or chocolate chips and add a little more vanilla syrup.

Vanilla Frappuccino

Caramel frappuccino

The Caramel Frappuccino is prepared in the same way as the Vanilla Frappuccino. In this regard, there is no need to deviate from the classic recipe - just add caramel syrup as a topping. You will need about two teaspoons: pour one into the blender bowl, the second into a glass before serving.

On a note! The Caramel Frappuccino goes great with chocolate chips.

Chocolate and Frappuccino Cream

To make a chocolate Frappuccino, you also don’t have to deviate from the classic recipe. Just add chocolate syrup, or melt a regular dark chocolate bar in a double boiler. This delicacy will especially please those with a sweet tooth! You can also brew a “children’s” version - prepare this recipe without adding coffee. This Frappuccino will be a real highlight of a children's party!

Frappuccino cream is also easy to prepare at home - just whisk the milk vigorously before adding the rest of the ingredients, and also completely exclude coffee from the composition. Sometimes this cocktail is prepared with the addition of cream or vanilla ice cream.

Chocolate

Vegetarian

The vegetarian version of the Frappuccino is prepared in the same way as the classic one. The only difference is that regular milk is replaced with soy milk, like whipped cream. Finding it on sale is a little more difficult than usual, but otherwise you won’t have any problems preparing the drink.

Frappuccino dark

When preparing a Frappuccino, dark coffee is replaced with tea - or any other black tea. In addition to fruit syrups, various fresh juices can also be added to this recipe.

Frappuccino with ice cubes

Iced Frappuccino is an interesting and unusual recipe. To prepare it, brewed coffee is divided into two servings. One of them is mixed in a blender, as with the classic cooking method. The second is poured into ice trays and frozen. Then the resulting coffee cubes are added to the blender with the rest of the ingredients and blended at high speed.

Creamy Frappuccino

Creamy Frappuccino is a higher calorie option, ideal for lovers of soft and delicate flavors. Milk in this drink is completely replaced with cream, but otherwise it is prepared in the traditional way.

Soft taste

Properties of Frappuccino

The main danger for Frappuccino fans is the large number of calories in one serving.

The calorie content of a serving of Frappuccino at a Starbucks coffee shop ranges from 400 kcal , that is, a fifth of the daily value for an adult leading an active lifestyle. High nutritional value is achieved, among other things, due to a large portion, the volume of which at Starbucks is 450-470 ml.

You can reduce the calorie content of the drink if you replace the milk with skim milk, and the cream with soy, do not add sprinkles and decorations, exclude sugar, leaving only syrup. Helps reduce calories and reduce portions to the classic volume of 250-300 ml.

The caffeine content of Frappuccinos is quite high, ranging from 60 to 150 mg . However, its effect is weakened by large amounts of milk, cream and sugar.

It is recommended to drink Frappuccino no more than once a day due to its high calorie content. The best time is before 16:00, in between meals.

Properties and calorie content of the drink

Frappuccino has a general tonic effect on the body and increases performance due to the nutritional value of its ingredients. 1 serving of this dessert contains at least 400 kcal, so its consumption is considered a complete meal.

However, doctors do not recommend enjoying it more than once a day: from 60 to 150 g of caffeine in combination with cream, milk and sugar put a strain on the body.

The modern coffee industry provides a replacement for high-calorie ingredients: instead of cow's milk, for example, you can order a cocktail made with coconut and soy milk or remove sugar.

Secrets of making a real Frappuccino

  1. Prepare only with freshly ground coffee.
  2. Before you start preparing the drink, it is important that the freshly prepared coffee cools down to room temperature.
  3. If you immediately add ice without waiting for it to cool completely, the taste will suffer greatly.
  4. There should be moderation in everything, this applies to sugar, syrup and other additional ingredients. Make sure that the sweets you add are in harmony with each other.
  5. The higher the fat content of the milk, the higher the calorie content of the drink.

To make a Frappuccino, you need to take the following ingredients:

  • coffee beans - take 2 teaspoons for 1 mug (200 ml);
  • milk 6%, any fat content possible – 100 ml;
  • syrup, nuts, condensed milk - to decorate the surface;
  • whipped cream - 3-4 tablespoons;
  • cubed ice – 100 grams;
  • sugar - 1 tablespoon (optional, otherwise it will turn out very sweet).

Frappuccino preparation steps

1. Grind 2 teaspoons of coffee beans in a coffee grinder, and then start brewing it. You can brew coffee using any method – Turkish coffee, French press, drip coffee maker. It doesn’t matter what you use to prepare the coffee, the main thing is that it is freshly brewed. If there is no coffee beans, then it can be replaced with any other one, with the exception of bagged coffee. In this case, we will brew coffee in a coffee maker.

2. Pour coffee into a mug and leave to cool for about 10-15 minutes. It is best if the coffee cools down to room temperature naturally, otherwise you can resort to using the refrigerator, but not the freezer.

3. Take a deep bowl (any dish, the main thing is that the contents of the bowl do not scatter throughout the kitchen while whipping). Pour cooled coffee, sugar and cold milk into it - beat it all with a blender for 1-2 minutes.

4. Grind the ice cubes to a “crumb” state. Ice cubes can be placed in a towel and crushed with a hammer, rolling pin or other heavy object. Add ice to the bowl with the “cocktail” and shake again for 1 minute.

On a note! When you add ice to hot coffee, all the flavor is lost.

5. Add any syrup or condensed milk to the bowl and mix everything thoroughly. Pour the resulting cocktail into a glass. It is best to take transparent dishes; serving this drink in it is much more impressive and appetizing. A glass jar can be a great alternative. But if you don’t have such a glass, don’t worry, you can take any other one available in your house.

6. Spread whipped cream on the surface of the finished coffee. Take 2-3 peeled walnuts (this can be any other type of nut) and finely chop them, then sprinkle the surface of the cocktail. Frappuccino is ready!

The cocktail can be consumed using a straw. It is recommended to consume it immediately, otherwise it will become very liquid as the ice finally melts. The sweetness and strength of coffee can vary, depending on your individual preferences. In addition to syrups, chocolate, cocoa powder, coconut, and vanillin are added to coffee. If you are watching your figure, you can take less fatty milk and, accordingly, add fewer sweet ingredients. It is important that the ingredients added as decoration are in harmony with each other.

Varieties of Frappuccino

Coffee lovers can choose a suitable drink from several types. Some can be drunk mostly at Starbucks, others can be found in different establishments.

  • Cafein free. Contains decaffeinated coffee instead of strong espresso.
  • Vegetarian. The recipe is less calorie. Cow's milk is replaced with coconut or soy milk. Cream of vegetable origin is used for decoration.
  • Light. Prepared with skim milk and just like vegetarian with vegetable cream. The drink is suitable for those who are currently on a diet or watching their figure.
  • Frappuccino cream. More like a dessert than a liquid. There is no coffee in the content. The sweet cream is very reminiscent of pudding. Milk with dense foam completes the composition.
  • Tazoberi. Tazo tea is used instead of coffee. Also includes a mixture of juices and syrups.

Because of the fillers, a description of the syrup is often added to the name of the drink. For example, raspberry, chocolate, caramel, etc.

Origin of Frappuccino

No one will be surprised by mixing coffee and milk; you can easily do it yourself. But Frappuccinos differ in that the drink contains crushed ice and other components are whipped to produce foam.

Frappe is translated as chilled, which clearly indicates the method of drinking the drink. It became widely known in the mid-1990s. At the origins was the Starbucks coffee chain, which has the rights to the name “Frappuccino”.

The drink is prepared using strong espresso, low-fat milk, topping and crushed ice.
