How did he appear

The birthplace of cappuccino is sunny Italy. There it has been known since the distant sixteenth century. It is believed that this is the invention of the monks who belonged to the Capuchin order. Hence the name of this delicate drink, which has been somewhat transformed over time. The history of cappuccino is very fascinating. The fact is that in the Middle Ages the Catholic Church categorically forbade drinking coffee. This strong drink of rich dark color was considered the product of the devil himself. But among the townspeople, coffee became increasingly popular, although the passion for it was carefully hidden.

The Capuchin monks soon found a way to rid coffee from the disfavor of the church. They started adding regular goat milk to it. Thanks to this addition, the coffee lost its rich dark shade and acquired a pleasant light brown creamy color. According to resourceful monks, thanks to milk and coffee, sin was removed, and it became completely safe for consumption. The name of this drink is associated with the color of the red-brown hoods on the cassock of the Capuchin monks. In Italian, hood sounds like cappuccio. So the church ministers invented a new unique drink. It had a delicate taste and pleasant aroma. The drink turned out to be so tasty that it quickly gained popularity. Soon the Pope himself decided to try it. He was shocked by the taste of this wonderful drink. It would not be an exaggeration to call him divine.

Over time, the transformation of cappuccino continued. One of the monks decided to try adding foamed milk rather than plain milk to the drink. He whipped it into a thick foam and combined it with hot coffee. But here’s the thing: the milk foam simply didn’t stick to the hot coffee. It quickly spread across the surface. The monks really wanted to ensure that the milk foam still stayed on the surface of the drink. They tested different methods and options. They tried to replace the milk with whipped cream. They also tried to froth milk using a stream of steam. But a really thick, dense foam still could not be obtained and dissolved in boiling water. And I really wanted to get a really dense and thick foam. But the monks were unable to do this task. It was resolved later. An Italian mechanic came up with a special machine. She frothed the milk directly into the steam. So, finally, a really lush foam head appeared on the cappuccino. The result was an even better version of the drink. It not only gave it amazing tenderness, but also protected the cappuccino from rapid cooling.

This amazing invention decided the fate of the drink. Now cappuccino could be made very quickly and without much difficulty. This machine works very simply. The principle is the same as what is now used in coffee machines.

Recipes for making cappuccino at home

Cappuccino is a drink that originated in the 17th century in Italy. It is believed that it owes its name to the order of Capuchin monks. They wore a brown robe that resembled the shade of coffee.

You can enjoy the mild taste of cappuccino not only in a restaurant - you can also prepare cappuccino at home (without a coffee machine or special milk frothing devices). But you need to understand that the taste of the drink will depend on the quality of the ingredients. It is important to get good coffee. As for milk, it should be full-fat - this is the only way to count on lush, persistent foam.

There are different types of cappuccino, with some recipes dating back centuries.

Classic cappuccino in a coffee machine

Using a coffee machine, this drink is prepared simply and quickly. List of ingredients:

  • a shot of espresso (if you can’t drink caffeine, you can take decaf);
  • 50 mg milk.

Coffee machines are equipped with a special cappuccino maker - this is a nozzle that is immersed in a container of milk and releases steam under pressure. Thanks to the hot steam, the milk is heated and whipped until foamy.

Experts recommend pouring coffee only into warmed mugs (that’s why coffee cups in restaurants are kept on a special stand above the coffee machine - this way they are always warm).

Coffee needs to be poured with milk so that the foam is located on top - the correct cappuccino is divided into layers.

How to make it without a coffee maker

Not everyone has a coffee machine or coffee maker. But in order to properly prepare cappuccino, you don’t need expensive household appliances.

The main ingredient is strong espresso coffee. And it can be brewed in a French press, Turk or small saucepan. The main thing is to strain the drink after brewing.

Milk can also be frothed without a cappuccino maker. The same French press, immersion or stationary blender is suitable for this. You can even achieve the appearance of foam using a whisk, but this procedure will take longer.

Double

If the standard amount of drink is not enough for you, you can make a double cappuccino. In restaurants, it is made using 2 times more coffee: 50-60 ml of espresso is poured with whipped milk (about 100 ml).

For serving, special tall glass glasses with a handle are used. The layers of the drink should not be mixed - this way it looks aesthetically more attractive.

Traditional

In order to prepare a traditional cappuccino, you first need to brew strong coffee (in a Turk or saucepan), then strain and pour into a warm cup.

We also heat the milk to 60-70 degrees, then beat it with a mixer or blender until foamy and carefully pour it into a mug. In most cases, to prepare 1 serving of drink you will need 30-40 ml of coffee and 50-100 ml of milk.
