Recipe for cocoa with milk: classic and with water

Today is another delicious page on my website - I’ll tell you how to make cocoa powder using milk or water at home and share recipes for a great drink. There is an immutable truth: a hearty breakfast is the key to a successful day. And if it’s also delicious, then it won’t come at a price! And of course, when we hear the word breakfast, the first thing that comes to mind is coffee. But even, even the most delicious, sometimes you want to replace it with something. And a miracle comes to our aid - the cocoa drink.

The history of preparing this delicious drink is so old that it boggles the imagination. Even before our era, 1500 years ago, the Indians of Central America prepared a thick, spicy drink from cocoa beans. It was a ritual drink of the Mayan and Aztec Indians, which they believed helped them gain wisdom, longevity and strength.

The Indians made cocoa thick and not sweet, and they valued its beneficial qualities rather than its taste. By the way, they always drank it cold. They added hot pepper and maize grains, and then poured the drink from one bowl to another for a long time until it whipped into foam.

Among the Europeans, Columbus was the first to try the drink, but his fellow countrymen did not appreciate the taste. And only in 1519, the conquistador Hernando Cortes was able to convince the Spanish nobility of the benefits of cocoa and the nobility of taste. At first they began to brew the drink and drink it hot; soon the chili pepper disappeared, but sugar, cinnamon and nuts were added instead.

By the way, thanks to the experiments of European chefs with the preparation of cocoa drink, we now have chocolate, chocolate-filled candies and a variety of drink options.

cocoa origin story

How to properly brew cocoa powder

To brew cocoa powder at home, you must first learn how to choose the right powder. In our stores, the most popular is instant cocoa powder. To prepare, just throw a spoon into hot water and the drink is ready. But you can often find a substitute for a natural product, so be vigilant and carefully read the composition of the powder.

  • Sometimes you can find natural cocoa powder, but, unlike instant cocoa, it requires mandatory cooking.
  • A high-quality powder, if rubbed with your fingers, does not fall off with dust, completely, and some remains on your fingers.
  • The grinding should be very fine, into powder, without the slightest grains.
  • Choose any vessel for cooking. You can cook it in a saucepan or in a Turk, it does not affect the taste, and the process will not change.

Some cocoa connoisseurs will tell you that the drink is good on its own, without any decorations. They may be right, but I'm a sucker for new taste sensations.

Additives to the drink:

The classic cooking recipe does not require additives. But no one will forbid us to diversify the taste of our favorite drink. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanillin are appropriate in cocoa - they will give joy to the soul and vigor to the body. Gourmets add finely chopped bananas or peaches to the ready-made drink and decorate it with whipped cream . (be sure to read the recipes in another article). There are options for preparing it using cocoa powder with the addition of coffee and fruit infusion.

Coffee plus cocoa

It’s easy to imagine how much benefit combining healing products will bring. And if we add the pleasure of taste that we get from consuming this magnificent duo, then it’s time to talk about perfection! Coffee with cocoa and milk is a real pleasure.

The three-ingredient cocktail has a soft, sweet taste. Milk neutralizes the bitterness and sourness of caffeine, adding tenderness and creaminess.

Please note: in Europe this composition of the drink is called “moccacino” in the Italian manner, in America “mocha”. But overseas fans often add chocolate or chocolate syrup to their coffee instead of cocoa powder. In Russia, the name “Hollywood-style coffee” has become firmly established, since its popularity originated there.

Recipe for making cocoa with water from powder

You can brew a magical drink using water, just take into account some of the preparation nuances. The drink is usually brewed with water to reduce calories. But to make it a little tastier, you can dilute the milk with water in a ratio of 1 to 1.

There are two options for preparing cocoa with water.

The first is when cocoa is added to cold water, and the second when the powder is added to boiling water. The method involves lumps. Everyone gets rid of them in their own way. But the first method is not correct - with prolonged heat treatment, the drink turns out not so aromatic, and it has much less benefits.

But if you add the powder directly to boiling water, lumps will not form. The main thing is to stir quickly and thoroughly.

And, of course, pay attention to the quality of cocoa. Much higher demands are placed on cocoa powder prepared with water. It must be fresh, completely natural - without the addition of foreign additives.

Necessary:

  • Powder - 2-3 tsp.
  • Sugar - to taste.
  • Water - 250 ml.

Cook:

  1. Boil water in a small saucepan or pot.
  2. Add powder and sugar there. Stir well.
  3. Bring to a boil and turn off.
  4. You can add a little milk and cream to the cup.

Recipes for making cocoa from cocoa powder at home

The word “cook” in relation to cocoa is not entirely appropriate. High temperature has a detrimental effect on the beneficial properties of this product and can turn a diet drink into an ordinary, albeit tasty, drink.

This is why most recipes are designed to ensure that the cocoa does not need to be kept on the stove for too long.

The drink can be prepared either according to the classic recipe or according to original ones, for example, with ginger (this will be a cough recipe), with banana and even with pepper.

Classic recipe with milk

Mastering the “classics” is a must. This is a basic recipe based on which you can try some other options and get creative.

You need to take a saucepan and add cocoa (1-2 teaspoons per serving) and granulated sugar (two teaspoons) into it. The mixture is poured with hot water.

You don’t need to pour a lot of it - your “semi-finished product” should have a consistency similar to liquid sour cream. But you need to stir it properly so that not a single lump remains.

So, continuing to work with a spoon, pour hot milk into the saucepan, then put the dish on the fire and bring to a boil.

A tasty drink (many know this from their own experience) has one drawback for children, and for adults as well - it is covered with milk foam . There are ways to get rid of it.

Firstly, you can beat the finished cocoa until foam forms (not to be confused with foam), this should be done with a whisk for 20 seconds. Secondly, you can boil cocoa in water, and then add preheated cream to the mug.

How to cook with water

The method of making cocoa without milk is quite simple. Boil water (at the rate of 200-250 ml per serving).

Pour a teaspoon of cocoa powder and 1-2 tablespoons of sugar (for each serving) into another container, pour a little boiling water into it, stir, then pour in the remaining water and put on the fire for a couple of minutes, without ceasing to stir.

This drink will be good with condensed milk, but in this case it is better to cook cocoa without sugar. Condensed milk is added to the cups, to taste.

With marshmallows

In this recipe, the cocoa must be prepared without water. For a liter of milk you will need ten teaspoons of powder, sugar to taste (however, you can do without it, because with marshmallows the drink is already sweet).

Cocoa powder and sugar are poured with a small amount of milk, stirred so that there are no lumps left. In a separate saucepan, boil the remaining milk and pour the prepared sweet mass into it. Keep on fire for 3-4 minutes.

When serving, throw a few marshmallows into each mug.

If you want to experiment, you can use the oven to turn this drink into an original dessert.

At first, they act exactly according to the recipe, with the only difference being that a few pieces of dark chocolate are thrown into the hot milk while it is on the stove.

Pour cocoa into refractory cups, put marshmallows in each and put in the oven (required temperature - 180 degrees).

The marshmallows will be deliciously browned, and the finishing touch to the dessert will be the chocolate syrup that will be used to decorate this splendor.

Cinnamon

The cooking technology is practically no different from the classic recipe: sugar and cocoa are poured with a small amount of warm milk.

They fight the lumps, and then pour milk into the mixture and put it on the stove.

Add the cinnamon just before the liquid boils and cook for two minutes, stirring. It is advisable to whisk the finished drink to saturate it with oxygen and obtain an appetizing fluffy foam.

With banana and ice cream

Banana cocoa is a rather original option; children will definitely be delighted with it. To prepare it you will need a blender: use it to beat bananas and milk.

The resulting mixture is poured with hot cocoa. To make the drink completely festive, add a tablespoon of vanilla ice cream to each cup.

With liqueur

Cocoa, sugar and a pinch of salt are poured with boiling water and put on fire. Add milk and remove from heat. Then comes the turn of liqueur (for example, orange) - it is poured into the cocoa, which is beginning to cool.

You will need approximately one and a half tablespoons of liqueur per serving of the drink, and the recommended ratio of water to milk in this recipe is 1:2.

With honey

One serving of the drink will require half a tablespoon of honey. It must be mixed with cocoa powder.

Then add hot milk to the mixture and keep it over low heat, stirring constantly.

With cream

To prepare this type of cocoa you will need 720 g of milk, 25 g of cocoa, 100 g of sugar and 120 g of cream.

The drink is brewed according to the classic recipe and a “cap” of whipped cream is built in each cup.

With egg yolk

First, “classic” cocoa is prepared using 800 g of milk. Then take two eggs and separate the yolks from the whites.

For this recipe, you only need yolks; they are ground with sugar and diluted with fairly hot cocoa. Place on the stove, heat, but do not boil. Shake and fill cups.

With pepper

This drink is partly a tribute to tradition, because in ancient times cocoa was prepared with pepper.

Homemade cocoa will, of course, not be as spicy, but nevertheless, a quarter teaspoon of chili pepper (ground) per couple of cups of milk is quite extreme.

Cocoa, pepper, sugar and a little cinnamon and salt are added to the milk , put on fire and even allowed to boil, and then kept on low heat for several minutes. Marshmallows are added to the finished drink.

With coffee

Ground coffee and cocoa (in a ratio of 2:1) are poured into a coffee pot and poured with boiling water.

When the drink is brought to a boil, cover it with a towel and leave for about three minutes. The drink, already poured into cups, is sprinkled with cinnamon.

For weight loss

It is correct to prepare cocoa for weight loss not with milk, but with water, from natural ground, and not from a soluble product, which may contain many different undesirable additives.

It is better not to use sugar, but a spoonful of honey would be quite appropriate.

Experts recommend this drink to those who want to lose weight, because it (even without sugar and milk) gives a feeling of fullness: after drinking it at breakfast, a person will not think about food until lunch.

Condensed cocoa

Condensed milk with cocoa is a convenient product for quickly preparing a delicious drink.

It is produced by many food industry enterprises; it is only important to choose the brand that represents the highest quality semi-finished product.

Cocoa is prepared like this: put two or three spoons in a mug and pour boiling water over it, stir and drink.
