History of origin

Frappe has Greek roots. A refreshing and cooling cocktail was invented in the 50s of the last century. Then it was served exclusively in small cafes and resort restaurants. Moreover, the purpose of inventing the drink was not cooling on hot days, but a demonstration of luxury. The fact is that at that time ice was in short supply and was considered a curiosity.

The author of the frappe is Dimitrios Vacondios. He prepared it for the first time in 1957 at a fair in Thessaloniki. Dimitrios was not a barista, he just wanted to drink coffee between presentations, and there was no hot water. The presentation included a shaker that was used to demonstrate the preparation of another drink. Using it, Dimitrios Vakondios accidentally discovered a recipe that has gained popularity all over the world.

Greek recipe

To experience the taste of a real Greek frappe, you can reproduce it at home. To do this, mix 50 grams of water with 100 grams of milk, add sugar and instant grains to your taste. Beat well with a blender and pour into a glass with ice. Water and milk should be at room temperature.

This recipe is used in Greece. Everyone chooses their own cooking method. The following remain constant: ice and foam, whipped with a blender, mixer or shaker.

Please remember that the drink contains caffeine. You need to monitor the quantity: a healthy person who does not have problems with hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases can drink it no more than twice a day. This amount is enough to feel a surge of strength and vigor. You should drink it no later than four hours before bedtime, otherwise the drink will negatively affect the process of falling asleep. If there are health problems, the amount of daily intake should be determined by the attending physician. Some diseases are a reason to completely give up coffee in any form.

Classic frappe recipe

This recipe is used in famous coffee shops and restaurants. To prepare the classic version of the drink, a minimum amount of ingredients is used.

  • fresh coffee;
  • milk;
  • ice - 10 medium-sized cubes.

Whip the milk with a mixer together with coffee, then place it in a glass with ice. Sugar is added to your taste when mixing the ingredients with a mixer. There is no sugar in the classic recipe, but you can add it if desired.

The ice must be crushed into small pieces - this is an important feature. Large cubes will damage the consistency, ruining the smooth flavor.

Lassi with mango and bananas

  • Banana – 3 pcs.
  • Mango – 1 pc.
  • Unsweetened cold yogurt – 2 cups.
  • Strawberries – 3-4 berries
  • Honey - to taste
  • Crushed ice – 1/3 cup

Pour chopped banana, mango and strawberries into yogurt and mix thoroughly in a blender until smooth. Pour crushed ice into a wide, low glass and pour in the fruit-yogurt mixture. Honey can be added as “threads” - they harden in the cold, making lassie not only tasty, but also incredibly beautiful.

Greek coffee frappe

If you are lucky enough to visit Greece, you will certainly try Greek frappe coffee, since this drink is national and is served in every establishment. The Greek frappe coffee recipe is radically different from the classic recipe; it is cheaper and faster. This is not surprising, because bartenders in a resort town have to make a hundred of these frappes in one evening and the principle “the simpler the better” applies here. You can prepare it in a shaker, blender, or again in a plastic bottle. The cooking instructions are as follows:

  1. Take 2 teaspoons of instant coffee, pour in about 60 ml of water. If you drink sweet coffee, sugar can be added at this stage.
  2. Add 100 ml of cold milk.
  3. Beat thoroughly using your chosen method.
  4. Throw 3-4 ice cubes into a glass and pour the coffee and milk drink into it.

This simple recipe takes minimal time to prepare at home. Of course, the taste will be different from the original frappe, it will not be as soft, and you don’t need to be a gourmet to feel the difference between instant coffee and freshly ground beans. But it’s definitely worth trying this method!

Greek frappe (classic recipe)

Ingredients:

  1. 2 tsp instant coffee (it is better to use granulated coffee, not powder);
  2. 100 ml milk (2.5% - 3.2% fat content);
  3. 2 tsp sugar (optional);
  4. 100 ml of cold mineral water;
  5. 7-8 ice cubes.

Cooking method:

1. Prepare everything you need to prepare a coffee drink: milk and water should be very cold. You will also definitely need a tall transparent glass or glass for Irish coffee, a straw for serving the cocktail and a blender. In many recipes or instructional videos on making frappe, we are told to use a shaker or just a jar. But from personal experience, we recommend making the foam with a blender, then it will come out thick, dense, and will not disappear immediately after serving the drink. Instead of a blender, you can, and rather even need, to use a frappe maker. This is a special device for making frappe that resembles a small mixer.

2. Mix 2 tablespoons of instant coffee and sugar in a shaking glass. If you have given up the habit of drinking coffee with sugar, then it is not necessary to add it. But keep in mind that without sugar, the foam when whipped will not be so fluffy and tender. Add a little water to the resulting mixture, about 5-6 tsp.

3. Beat everything with a blender for about 1 minute. The foam should be fluffy and dense, so that it does not disappear immediately after serving the drink.

4. The glass in which the frappe will be served should be placed in the freezer in advance for 10-15 minutes so that its walls are covered with frosty frost. Pour the resulting foam into an ice glass (if it is very thick, carefully transfer it with a teaspoon) and add chilled milk and water to it. If you are following a specific diet or simply want to make a more refreshing and lighter drink, you can omit the milk altogether. The main thing is to add milk and water slowly and carefully so that the foam does not disappear.

5. When the glass is filled to the brim, add the remaining ice cubes, decorate the drink with chocolate or caramel if desired, insert a straw and enjoy the divine cool drink. Without a doubt, it will become your favorite.
